Hellboy, the demonic superhero’s story is being rebooted and retold. With a new team and new star involved in the project, the aim is to bring the unconventional superhero back to the big screen.
Hellboy successfully brought the story of the demon who was brought up by a human and rose to become the greatest paranormal investigator.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Millennium is working with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin for a new version that will re-launch the demon’s story.
Dark Horse Entertainment, which is the production arm of Dark Horse Comics, will also be involved in the production of the movie.
According to the outlet, instead of having Ron Perlman who starred in the previous version titled Hellboy, Stranger Things and Quantum of Solace star David Harbour is in talks to play the lead role.
It should be noted that this is the second superhero project Harbour has been associated with. Just some time back, he was being considered to play Nathan Summers aka Cable in Deadpool 2.
The outlet also noted that Neil Marshall, known for his work in the horror genre and his work on Game of Thrones is being considered to helm the reboot.
Ron Perlman version
Fans might remember the older version of the movie that had Ron Perlman in the lead role. Perlman’s performance as the demon was much appreciated by fans everywhere as it gained a massive fan following. Guillermo Del Toro had co-written and directed the Perlman version and was also a part of the sequel.
The sequel was made after having seen the first movie’s box office collection. However, the sequel did not manage to perform well as it suffered at the hands of The Dark Knight that released just days after the Perlman starrer.
Comic book origins
Hellboy’s first appearance in the comic books was back in 1993. He was described as a demon from hell that was summoned to Earth by Nazis during the World War era.
Originally named Anung Un Rama, the infant demon was discovered by Allied forces and Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who took him in and raised him as his own son.
Since the professor brought him up as a normal boy, he was granted the status of a human and went on to become a member of BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense).
Much like other popular Marvel and DC superheroes, Hellboy also has a wide range of abilities. Being a demon gives him superhuman strength, endurance, stamina and healing factor amongst others.
He also possesses in-depth knowledge of the supernatural and his right hand has the power to end the world. His right hand is called the “Right Hand of Doom,” which was given to him by another demon called Azzael.
He also ages extremely slowly as compared to an average human. Despite that in the comic books, he has been shown to quickly mature physically.
A plot for the reboot has not been revealed yet but it would certainly be made keeping in mind today’s superhero scenario. The Perlman starrer saw the demon going up against enemies like Kroenen and Rasputin.
It would be interesting to see which villains will the Harbour starrer feature. Since comic books tend to work as effective source material for movies, makers of the reboot could dive deep into the comics to re-introduce fans to the world of Hellboy.
Hellboy reboot does not have an official release date yet but it remains to be seen if an update is released in months to come.
