Television network TLC has cancelled the reality show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” following reports that one of its cast members, June Shannon, is dating a registered sex offender. Shannon, known as “Mama June” on the show, was photographed with Mark McDaniel while hanging out with friends in a hotel room and house hunting in Hampton. Shannon also reportedly purchased a car for McDaniel.
The network issued an official statement on Friday, saying:
TLC has cancelled the series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and ended all activities around the series, effective immediately. Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the children's ongoing comfort and well-being.
McDaniel was convicted for molesting Shannon's now adult daughter, Anna Cardwell. He served ten years in prison and was released in March of last year. He was dating Shannon at the time of his conviction, but the two allegedly rekindled their romance after he got out of jail.
Shannon recently separated from her husband, David Michael Thompson, who also appeared on the reality show. She accused him of infidelity after finding out that he had an active profile in a dating site.
However, she has denied dating McDaniel. In a video she posted on Facebook, she said that she would never put her kids in danger. Then again, Shannon has not been publicly seen with her younger daughters Alana, Pumpkin and Jessica because child services have reportedly gotten involved. The children are said to be staying with their father, Thompson.
Cardwell, who was eight when McDaniel molested her, has opened up about her experience. She said that Shannon was initially skeptical of her molestation claims. She also said that she is “confused” by the situation.
“Mama said the story isn't true and she said she hasn't seen Mark since he's been out of jail. My whole body believes that she is telling the truth but my mind is going back and forth ,” Cardwell told People.
TLC has reportedly offered the young woman counselling services.
