It will not be wrong if we say that 2015 has witnessed a major uplift in the level of Cinema when we talk about the number of females in cast and production together with their wages. There have been many actresses including Meryl Streep, Patricia Arquette who have been very outspoken regarding this, time and again. This year we saw a large number of female centric movies and some outstanding performances.
Let us take a quick sneak peak into some statistics that depict the actual scenario of women in the film industry. While if we talk about the top 100 films, women protagonist’s percentage is only 12 %. When we talk about the percentage of writers and directors, it is 7 percent and 11 percent respectively, when top 250 grossing movies are concerned. These data have been revealed by Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film. For the last 20 years, almost 77% of the crew members have been male in the best grossing films. “We never seem to get any momentum going”, explains Davis, Academy Award-winning actress and founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
There have been many films like “Thelma and Louise” , after which it was predicted that female oriented movies are soon going to be a major part of English cinema. But, this has never happened and even if there are certain movies with female protagonists, time and again their relevance is out- shined by male-centric films. This year we saw women power onto the silver screens that made it successful when related movie grossing are concerned. “Mockingjay 2” is one of the biggest examples.
