Jessica Chastain, the gorgeous Oscar nominated actress succeeded in overpowering both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mark Wahlberg over the weekend as her horror flick made on a low budget won the weekend box office title for North America. She also was able to win the second spot this weekend with Zero Dark Thirty.
Mama, the supernatural thriller starring Chastain earned $28.1 million for the three days Friday to Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada. The film beat a number of new releases that were fueled by male testosterone that finished well back for the weekend.
Zero Dark Thirty, which Chastain has been nominated for an Oscar for best actress, finished second for the weekend with $17.6 million in receipts. Another release late in 2012 and a favorite for an Oscar, Silver Linings Playbook, was third over the weekend with more than $11.3 million.
Finishing fifth was crime thriller Broken City that stars Russell Crowe and Wahlberg. The thriller finished with $9 million, just behind fourth place Gangster Squad, which took in $9.1 million. The Last Stand, the new film starring Schwarzenegger was a dismal 10th with just $6.3 million in sales.
In Mama, Chastain plays a guitarist who is not interested in having children but must take care of her two nieces who have been orphaned and living in the woods. Chastain’s character and her husband attempt to help the girls re-adjust to living a normal life.
The movie was based on a short film from 2008 and was produced on a budget of only $15 million.
