Nick Cannon brings back the beats to Atlanta A&T for VH1’s teaser for its movie “Drumline: A New Beat.” Read on to learn more about the detail.
According to Deadline, the “drumtastic” sequel will feature new blood as the movie is set years later after the first movie. The sequel stars Alexandra Shipp as Dani Bolton, an upper-class Brooklyn girl and a promising young percussionist who defies her parents, leaving Brooklyn, in hopes of joining the fictional Southern university and revitalizes their once prominent drumline, becoming the first female drumline leader in the school’s history.
Leonard Roberts reprises his role as Sean Taylor, Cannon’s straight-edged foil in the original film. He returns to Atlanta A&T as its new Band Director looking to make a mark. Nick Cannon, who will be an executive producer alongside Devon Miles, will reprise his role in a cameo appearance.
Cannon explaining that adding a female lead character would make a lot of sense as a producer who wants to create an updated version of the film.
“Drumline was not just a successful film; it was a cultural happening -Even though it was released over a decade ago, I am constantly approached by people on the street who tell me how much of an impact it made on them.” says Cannon in the Deadline article.
“Drumline” was directed by Charles Stone III. It is about a fictional story of a historically black college and university marching band. A young aspiring drummer from New York enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school’s drum section. The original film received highly positive reviews with most critics liking the energy and playing of the musical bands in the film. It was a success at the box office, earning over $56 million in the U.S. and almost $1.2 million in foreign markets.
“Drumline: A New Beat” is a production of Fox Television Studios and VH1 Television. It is directed by Billie Woodruff from a script penned by Regina Hicks and Karin Gist. It will be executive produced by Cannon along with Wendy Finerman, Jody Gerson and Dallas Austin. Production will begin in the spring and will premiere on VH1 this fall.
