In “House of Cards” Season 3 Episode 9 “Chapter 35,” the Underwoods deal with the consequences brought about by a military operation. It could potentially affect their future in politics. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.
As Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) embarks on his campaign for the 2016 presidency, he learns a disturbing news from his wife Claire (Robin Wright). The Russians lost eight men in the peacekeeping efforts in the Jordan Valley and the blame game begins between Israel and Palestine.
Pres. Underwood gives Pres. Petrov (Larks Mikkelsen) of Russia a call, but their conversation is less than pleasant. In fact, Frank tells Claire that Russia is not allowing anyone, especially the United Nations, from getting to the blast site. The Kremlin thinks it’s a matter they have to resolve internally. Petrov doesn’t accept the world’s sympathy.
Claire has a meeting with Russian ambassador about the tragic killing of their soldiers, but during the course of their conversation, she gets the impression that the unfortunate incident was, in fact, initiated by the Russians. But why would they kill their own men? The ambassador wouldn’t say any further. It’s his boss who’s taking control of the situation.
Claire brings this matter to Frank and the other concerned officials not realizing that it is a ploy. The United States military, as the Russians predicts, will have to aggressively demand access to the blast site as Pres. Underwood deploys more soldiers. However, this resulted in casualty. The troops have to be pulled back.
Russia, meanwhile, leaks some footages which enrage Israel. It’s a catastrophe and Frank calls Petrov once again to accuse him of never really going with the peace process anyway. This time, he hangs up on him.
As this is going on, Remy (Mahershala Ali) delivers documents to Jackie Sharp (Molly Parker). He snaps at her, but then he apologizes and says that he’s sympathetic of her situation being on the campaign, doing her duties in Washington, while making sure to spend time with family.
Later on, Remy gets into a traffic altercation with the cops and is arrested. But after settling with the chief, he’s released and he immediately goes to Jackie’s house to tell her about the incident. In a brief moment, they kiss. Is Remy crushed that Jackie chose to get married? Is this why he’s acting out? Jackie clarifies that she will always be there for him. As his friend.
Further, in “The House of Cards,” Doug (Michael Kelly) has dinner with Gavin (Jimmi Simpson) and he asks about his passport again. How long is he going to work for the FBI? Doug is still evasive about this. Anyway, Gavin gives him the bad news – Rachel is dead. He shows him proof. It’s a graphic photo of her murdered body. Is this for real? This sends Doug to spiral into depression and alcoholism.
The White House got wind of Doug’s relapse, so Frank invites him to the Oval Office. Doug shows him the proof he got from Gavin about Rachel. He collapses on the president’s lap and is escorted into his house by the Secret Service. Angry at what happened to his former aide, Pres. Underwood calls up Heather Dunbar (Elizabeth Marvel) to admonish her for putting Doug’s life in danger. Heather doesn’t understand what is going on, but apologizes to the president anyway.
