Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with the police interviewing Professor Annelise Keating (Viola Davis) regarding Sam Keating’s (Tom Verica) disappearance. She told them that she now believed that Sam had murdered Lila Stanguard. She told them that she had become certain of this after she had learned from her associate that he had impregnated Lila. After she threatened to expose him, he had been upset. She then told them that she had gone over to Detective Nate Lahey’s (Billy Brown) place and had come back home to find him missing. Because of this, she believed that he had fled.
However, what really happened was that she had found Sam dead on the floor, and Wes Gibbins (Alfred Enoch) came back and apologized. After Wes told her what had happened, she told him not to be sorry for what he had done as he had deserved it for murdering Lila. She then ordered Wes to convince everyone to burn the body and to get of the remains and promised that she would help them get out of it.
Back at Annelise’s house, Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) and Michaella Pratt (Aja Naomi King) were becoming paranoid and felt that Annelise was trying to set them up. Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) then reassured them that if one of them cracked and confessed, the others would find a way to pin it on that person instead. Annelise then came back home and called for Wes to go with her into the study. There, Wes asked her to let the others know that she knew about what had happened, but she refused to allow him to tell anyone, including Rebecca Sutter (Katie Findlay), so that they would be able to go through with their interviews well. They were then interrupted by Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil), as District Attorney Wendy Parks (Alison Reiner) had dropped by to pay Annelise a visit. However, after she told Annelise that she believed that she was using Sam as an excuse to get the charges dropped against Griffin O’Reilly and Rebecca. Annelise threw her out of her house.
At the police station, Wes, during his interview, told the police that after the study group at his apartment, they had gone to the bonfire. He also informed them that he never really paid much attention to Sam and informed them that Annelise’s client, Rebecca, was his girlfriend.
While this happened, Annelise apologized to Rebecca for not exposing her husband as soon as the photo of him had gone public and promised that she would get the charges against her dropped before the trial. Later, at Wes’ apartment, Wes reassured Rebecca that Annelise did not know that they had murdered Sam. However, Rebecca was getting a little bit suspicious of her boyfriend, as Wes was too calm for someone who should be panicking. However, he told her that if he did panic, then the police would notice it right away.
Back at Annelise’s house, Laurel and Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) took some hair samples of Sam so that it could be tested against the fetus that was retrieved during Lila’s second autopsy. After this, Laurel told Frank to stop bothering her, because he had lied to her about his “long-distance” girlfriend.
Next, Connor asked some help from Oliver to figure out where Sam was the night that Lila had died. After Wes suggested that they get back Sam’s laptop from evidence, because his phone’s GPS might have stored the backup data as to where he had gone with his laptop, Annelise instructed Bonnie to get it at the police station with Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry). However, they were unsuccessful to retrieve it, as Parks refused to release it to them.
At Wes’ apartment, Michaela started to become paranoid again, which caused Connor to call her “Raskolnikov,” as she was acting like the character from the novel “Crime and Punishment.” Rebecca then told them that Lila had asked her the week she had died about the clinic where Rebecca got her birth control pills, which meant that if Lila knew that she was pregnant, she would need a clinic for an abortion.
However, the judge in charge of the case refused to allow them to subpoena the clinic’s patient’s files, because it would be a violation of the doctor and patient confidentiality privileges that everyone who went there has.
Meanwhile, during Laurel’s interview, she told the police the same story that they had all given and told them that Sam often looked at her in a sexual manner.
Back at Annelise’s, in the kitchen, she asked Frank if Annelise’s story regarding Sam was to be trusted. Frank then told her that it wasn’t her job to be worried about Annelise and showed her that he trusted Annelise, no matter what.
Outside, in the living room, Connor tried to talk Michaela into going to the police with him to confess their involvement in the murder, as they weren’t the ones who had killed Sam in the first place. However, Michaela refused to listen and found a precedent that would allow them to get the security camera footage of the clinic in the waiting area.
After the judge allowed them to do this, provided that they view the footage in the courthouse, Frank gave Annelise the DNA results, which showed that Sam was indeed the father of Lila’s child. Annelise then told Frank what really had happened, because he found it strange that she had been relieved to discover that he was, in fact, the father of the child. However, she made him promise not to tell Bonnie and only told him because she knew that Frank would do everything in his power to help her.
During Asher’s interview with the police, he informed them that Michaela had stolen his trophy and that he had found it strange that nobody answered at the Keating house because Connor’s SUV had been in the driveway. He then revealed that he had a one-night stand with Bonnie who, in her interview, told them that it was a one-night thing only. Bonnie also revealed that Sam had known that Lila was pregnant and had tried to make a pass at her to keep her quiet.
Afterwards, Bonnie confronted Asher and told him that what had happened that night was never going to happen again.
After viewing the footage, they saw that Sam and Lila had been arguing and were able to get the receptionist of the clinic to testify, who told them that Lila did not want to go through with abortion and because of that, Sam had been angry. After Annelise revealed that Parks was withholding the laptop from evidence, the judge ordered that an “appointed forensic expert” should look at the laptop to see if Sam was truly at Lila’s sorority house the night that she had died.
Afterwards, Michaela was interviewed by the police and told them that they had parked in front of the Keating house because they knew that they would have “better parking there” than anywhere else so that they could go to the bonfire.
Afterwards, before the next hearing, Michaela told Connor that she was going to go with him to turn themselves over to the police. Connor then told her that they needed Laurel to side with them so that they could pin everything on Rebecca and Wes. However, before court, Frank confronted Laurel and told her that if she kept lying so well, she might just get away with what she had done. This disturbed Laurel, but before she could confront Frank, Connor and Michaela forced her to listen to them, or else they would turn her in to the police.
During the trial, the forensic expert told the entire court that he had discovered that the GPS coordinates on the laptop confirmed that Sam had been at Lila’s sorority house during the times in which she was said to be murdered. Because of this, the judge dropped all of the charges against Rebecca.
Outside, after the hearing, Laurel gave in to Connor and Michaela and went with them that night to the police station. However, Connor and Michaela stopped in their tracks and were greatly surprised to see Annelise and Wes and wondered how they had known that they would be going to the police station at that particular time. Laurel then revealed to them that she had ratted them out to Wes and Annelise. It turned out that she had realized that Annelise knew because the only way Frank would have known about it was if Annelise had told him. After confronting Wes for the truth, she informed him about what Michaela and Connor were planning to do, and Wes convinced Annelise that she was the only one that they would listen to. Annelise then begged Connor, Michaela and Laurel to allow her to help them, promising them that if they did, then they would be able to truly get away with murder.
Afterwards, life went on. Michaela had her wedding dress fitted, and they all had exams. However, for their exam, they were given a case study which mimicked what had happened the night of Sam’s murder, and their task was to be able to find a way to acquit the four individuals in questions.
Afterwards, Rebecca and Wes celebrated, and she surprised him with a small Christmas tree.
Meanwhile, Connor was interviewed by the police. However, he did not reveal anything. Afterwards, he called Annelise up as he had discovered that they had a new problem – Annelise’s sister-in-law, Hannah Keating (Marcia Gay Harden), was in town.
