Daniel Craig currently plays James Bond but there are some worthy contenders lined up as Craig’s successor and one of them is Idris Elba.

While fans have come out in support of Elba as the next Bond, there are some who think he is not right for the part. The Wolf of Wall Street star Joanna Lumley is one of them.

Joanna Lumley’s statement

The Guardian reported that Lumley believes Elba should not play the role of the next James Bond. According to the outlet, she said so because the actor does not fit the description of the character in the novels written by Ian Fleming.

She did call the actor stunning but she believes that he is simply not right for the character who has been described quite well in the books. It should be noted that she is not the only who thinks Elba is unsuitable for Bond.

Back in 2015, author Anthony Horowitz was criticized when he called Elba too street to play Bond. Following the criticism, he apologized and stated that he chose his words poorly.

Idris Elba not suitable for Bond?

The question is, whether Elba really is not suitable to play Bond. The actor is charming, has an amazing physique and has some really good roles to his name.

In addition to this, he also has a loyal fan base that wants to see him play the spy. In fact, there was a time when Elba was tipped as one of the top contenders alongside Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston to take on the role of 007 after Craig.

Many have argued that since 007 is a fictional character, he can be played by any actor irrespective of race and color. Since Elba happens to be quite popular, chances of him taking on the role are quite high.

Amongst his loyal fan base is Sir Michael Cane himself. He was once asked in an interview about who should be Craig’s successor and according to him, Elba would make a really good Bond.

Idris Elba’s comment

Independent reported what Elba himself feels about taking on the spy role. He said that wherever he goes, people want him to take on the role. But he thinks he is too old for the role. He also added that just the thought of running around, cars, ladies, and martinis sound terrible.

Other contenders

When it comes to the most iconic role in the business there is bound to be competition. Reports have stated numerous times about how there are some worthy actors who could prove to be Craig’s successor.

Apart from Elba, Hardy, and Hiddleston, Poldark star Aidan Turner, X-Men: Apocalypse star Michael Fassbender and James Norton are just some actors who have proven to be bookies’ favorite to take on the role.

Each of these actors at different points of time has been the top contender but till now there has not been any confirmation from the producers. They still want Craig to return as 007 for Bond 25.

Bond 25

No official details about the upcoming Bond movie are known yet. But recent update about the movie stated that five major studios are currently fighting over distribution rights for the movie.

With Craig speculated to return for the fifth time, this could be his last appearance as the spy. Speculations about him returning for the role began when he gave a more positive response about reprising it. He stated that he would miss playing Bond once he quits the franchise.

Release date

No release date has been confirmed yet but Bond producers are looking to release the upcoming movie by October next year. It remains to be seen if the producers are able to achieve their target release date and who ends up as Craig’s successor in future Bond movies.
