Katy Perry is one of the best-selling artists, though there are a few others who are more visible than her, but she’s a tabloid favorite, covering major magazines practically every week. No doubt, like most other celebrities out there, she has found herself in hot water many times over the years. But, unlike nearly all of her contemporaries, there’s one area that Perry has never disappointed – that’s her Honesty about her relationships.
In her recent interview with Marie Claire, Perry opens up about her divorce from Russell Brand and her relationship with religion, including her reasons for being so honest.
“I feel like my secret magic trick that separates me from a lot of my peers is the bravery to be vulnerable and truthful and honest,” Perry says. “I think you become more relatable when you’re vulnerable. When you try to market yourself like some supernatural figurine who can’t be fucked with, I always resort back to Scripture: Pride comes before a fall.”
It really feels refreshing to hear such a smart statement, from someone as famous as Perry. Celebrities really work hard to cultivate their certain persona, and we understand Perry is careful about what she says, but it’s nice to know that she isn’t shy away from telling the truth.
Perry also talked her very public divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand and also spoke about her post-breakup mentality. “I was, like, just eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that’s it,” she said. “There are two ways you can go: You can either nurture yourself or go destructive. I have gone down the destructive path before, and that didn’t work for me.”
Perry was also open about her relationship with religion. “I’m not Buddhist, I’m not Hindu, I’m not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God,” she says. “I pray all the time — for self-control, for humility.”
When you’re a major celebrity, religion is typically a “No-Go” area of your discussion, since it’s such a subject that will almost always lead to controversy, no mater how you take is on the subject. But Perry’s openly unapologetic behaviour is certainly what that sets her apart from the majority of other celebs.
Perry talks a lot more about her most personal things in her life – she opens about her relationship with her conservative parents, her feelings about boyfriend John Mayer, her planning about having kids and her attitude towards self-confidence. It’s really worth the read!
