Ivar the Boneless will try his hardest not to kill another one of his brothers in Vikings Season 5. According to Alex Hogh Andersen, Ragnar Lothbrok’s (Travis Fimmel) youngest born will not go to war against his own brother, Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) – at least, not in the beginning.
Vikings: Civil War
Ivar the Boneless might have a disability, but he is one dangerous man. His temperament and violent nature caused him to not only find himself in dangerous situations but also become a threat himself. To recall, in the Season 4 finale, after his leadership was questioned, Ivar killed his brother Sigurd (David Lindstrom) with an axe to the heart.
Likely, Ivar’s insecurities will lead to more deaths in the upcoming season, and one that should be careful of the Viking is his own brother, Bjorn. The two seem to have formed a rivalry (more than the other brothers), but while they will be going on to separate ways in Season 5, Ivar still has beef to settle with Bjorn’s mother Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).
However, Andersen promised that his character, Ivar, will not do anything to aggravate the tension between him and Bjorn. In an interview with TV Guide, the actor described the dynamic between the two characters in Vikings Season 5.
“I think they both know that they will probably end up killing each other if they were to fight each other,” the actor explained. “So I think they want to go their each way, just settle down with each other or make the best out of this horrible situation they’ve put themselves in, especially Ivar.”
While Ivar has a disability, he has proven himself a formidable warrior. Unlike his father and his brother who can boast of their skill and precision, it is Ivar’s recklessness and fearlessness that makes him a dangerous opponent.
However, as Andersen previously warned, Ivar still wants to avenge her mother’s death. As the new Season 5 trailer embedded below also showed, Ivar declares war against Kattegat’s current queen, Lagertha.
Keeping Up With Rollo
Meanwhile, Clive Standen also confirmed his appearance in Vikings Season 5. While he might miss a few episodes because of his new show Taken, he will still play an important role in the next installment of the critically-acclaimed historical series.
However, in November, fans might notice a significant difference to his character, Rollo. The brother of Ragnar will be a lot more “explosive,” according to Standen.
“Nearly every season, [show creator] Michael Hirst has allowed me to reinvent this man, and Season 5 is no different,” he stated. “I think when he comes back, all bets are off… You’ll see a very different Rollo. [Season 5]’s going to be explosive, but not in the ways that you’d expect.”
Rollo will likely be affected by the death of his brother. As the Seer warned, “the consequences of Ragnar’s death are not yet played out.” Therefore, while Fimmel has made his exit and has stated that he will not return, the presence of his character will be felt in the coming season (and beyond).
Vikings Season 5 Premiere Date And Other Details
Elsewhere, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), saddened by the death of his friend, Ragnar, and wife, Helga (Maude Hirst), will sail on his own and reach a new territory no Viking has gone to before. Meanwhile, Bjorn will journey to the Mediterranean where he and his fellow warriors will be riding on camels. Also joining the series this season is Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Bishop Heahmund of the warrior priests. The new character is expected to clash with Ivar in the battlefield.
