With the recent success of “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation,” there were reports about Tom Cruise wanting to do sequels to his other movies as well and top on his list was a sequel to “Jack Reacher.” Cruise also green lit the project and Ed Zwick was brought aboard to direct the movie, but there was no information about when the movie will release. New updates from Paramount Pictures confirm just that.
According to The Wrap, Paramount Pictures has officially set the release date for “Jack Reacher 2” on Oct. 21, 2016. The movie will see Cruise reprising his role as former Military Police official Jack Reacher who travels across the US punishing the ones who have done wrong to others. If reports are to be believed then “Avengers” star Cobie Smulders will be playing the role of the female lead thus replacing Rosamund Pike from the first one.
It has also been confirmed that the second installment will be based on the novel “Never Go Back” where Jack Reacher travels back to his old military base in Virginia to meet an old friend who also happens to be his former commanding officer. Till the time he reaches there, he finds out that his former commanding officer has been arrested and he himself has been accused of having done something bad.
Slash Film reported that Smulders is in talks to play the role of Danika who could be loosely based on the character of Susan Turner, the commanding officer mentioned above. The first installment did not really do well domestically but because of Cruise’s massive following outside the US, “Jack Reacher” did exceptionally well at the overseas box office.
The actor expects to build another franchise out of this which will be in addition to the already existing “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Fans can expect yet another action extravaganza from Tom Cruise but this time in his Jack Reacher avatar.
