Jennifer Falls” Season 1 Episode 7 “Three Dates with My Mother” aired on Wednesday, July 22, 2014, at 10:30 p.m. on TV Land. Jennifer had been seeing a psychiatrist to handle the stress she was feeling since moving in with her mother. The whole family joined the therapy sessions to better help Jennifer, but instead, they started airing out their own issues. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.

The episode opened with Wayne (Ethan Suplee) addressing Stephanie’s (Nora Kirkpatrick) control issues, as she was undermining his decisions in their bar, as well as in life. Jennifer (Jaime Pressly) told his brother that his wife was  railroading him. But he justified that this is exactly how marriage works.

Maggie (Jessica Walter) walked in the bar offering Jennifer this artisanal ham and brie sandwich, which Jennifer didn’t want but Wayne really wanted. Maggie ignored her son while making her daughter feel guilty about “pushing love away.” So Jennifer took the sandwich and said she could give it to Gretchen (Dylan Gelula). Maggie told her that Gretchen wasn’t home, which irked Jennifer because Gretchen was still being punished for what happened in “School Trouble.”

Driving with Dina (Missi Pyle) inside her truck, Jennifer told her best friend that she was seeing a psychiatrist to help with her anxiety over her relationship with her mother. Dina showed Jennifer what she does to handle stress, which was to go to her “happy place” by closing her eyes and indulging in drinks at the cabana served by a guy named Alejandro. Jennifer tried Dina’s trick, but she only envisioned her mother in the cabana with her. Clearly, Jennifer’s mother issues was getting to her.

Back home, Jennifer nervously approached her mother to tell her that she has been having sessions with a psychiatrist for months now. She hesitated telling her about it before because Maggie, a psychologist, has prejudice against psychiatrists. But Jennifer needed Maggie for the family session her doctor wanted her to do, so she had no choice but to tell her mother and invited her to join.

Everyone was present at the therapist’s office. When the doctor said that the person under a lot of stress could begin talking (referring to Jennifer), everyone started babbling about their issues, overwhelming the therapist.

Apparently, Gretchen felt stifled by her mother, Wayne felt Stephanie was being too controlling, while Stephanie could not help but be the one always in control. Maggie, on the other hand, was online shopping on her phone. Jennifer looked at her, as if to say to respect the therapist who was handling them. But Maggie brushed her off and said that at least she was being productive in the therapy session.

The therapist gave everyone things to do. It was some sort of a homework, which they will have to talk about in the next family session. For Gretchen, the therapist suggested Jennifer lay off her daughter for a week and let her do what she wants. For Wayne and Stephanie, the therapist suggested giving Wayne the power to make decisions and choices, with Stephanie just supporting in the sidelines. For Jennifer and Maggie, the therapist suggested spending time together.

Gretchen loved her homework in the beginning. Having all the freedom to make her decisions was liberating. She got a tan, she changed her look daily, she got more and more crazy with the things she could do, and her mother could only watch her.  But, on the other hand, having all that freedom can be exhausting that by the end of the week, Gretchen told the psychiatrist to take this back. She could not handle the pressure of having to top herself off. “Say I’m out of control, say it’s for my own good,” begged Gretchen. She realized she needed boundaries.

Wayne was making bad decisions about their business left and right, and Stephanie was having a nervous breakdown watching Wayne make the wrong moves. It wasn’t working, and the bar became out of control that by the end of the week, Wayne made the choice to hand over his power to Stephanie. Guess this really was how their marriage worked.

Jennifer and Maggie spending time together instantly spelled disaster. They clashed a lot, and Jennifer always felt that her mother never showed any vulnerability, nor even acknowledging that Jennifer became a failure. But they got stuck inside an elevator for hours one time. With nothing to do and no one else to talk to as they waited for the rescue team, Maggie started opening up about her own mother, and Jennifer got to know a side of her on a deeper level. She understood her mother more because of it and started learning to be more tolerant of her.
