In the October issue of Vanity Fair, Jennifer Lawrence criticized the gluten-free diet, calling it “the new cool eating disorder, the ‘basically I just don’t eat carbs.’” The interviewer, Vanity Fair contributor Sam Kashner, noted that “Jennifer is the anti-vegan, anti-gluten-free consumer, having just eaten a breakfast of spaghetti and meatballs before the interview.”
As the name suggests, the gluten-free diet excludes grains like wheat, rye and barley, which contain protein gluten. It was initially meant for individuals who have celiac disease, but in recent years, it has become a diet fad in the United States, where 1 percent of the population suffer from gluten intolerance.
In TIME, Jeffrey Kluger wrote that health bloggers started promoting the gluten-free diet with claims that it can help people lose weight and overcome fatigue, among other things.
“As has been clear for a long time, and as the Wall Street Journal reports today in a splendid and about-time piece, a whole lot of that is flat-out hooey, a result of trendiness, smart marketing, Internet gossip and too many people who know too little about nutrition saying too many silly things,” said Kluger on TIME. Lawrence, 24, has been criticized for being “too curvy” to play Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games.” The actress hit back by saying, “I’d rather look chubby on screen and like a person in real life” in a 2012 interview.
However, Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly taken offense. Though Lawrence didn’t direct the comment at Paltrow, the latter is known to be an advocate of the gluten-free diet, which she endorses in her lifestyle website Goop.
A source told Hollywood Life that Paltrow was offended with Lawrence’s remarks and thought that her statement was “downright ignorant and mean.
“Everyone knows she’s gluten-free, she’s not stupid she knows that was a direct hit at her,” added the source to Hollywood Life. Paltrow banned gluten from her household when tests revealed that her children and then-husband Chris Martin were gluten intolerant.
Martin is now dating Lawrence.
