John Wick is not going back to retirement any time soon. While doing press rounds ahead of the release of John Wick 2 on Digital HD and DVD/Blu-Ray, director Chad Stahelski teases his plans for John Wick 3.

John Wick 3 in the Works

John Wick was a massive success when it was released in 2014. It grossed $88 million at the global box office (from a production budget of $20 million) and created a cult following. Critics hailed it as one of the best movies of 2014.

While some franchises are unlucky with sequels, John Wick 2 was different, its sequel was even more successful than the original. The follow-up topped the box office earning of the original in just eight days and ended its theatrical run with $167 million.

That being said, John Wick 3 is a guarantee. Stehelski revealed in an interview that the next movie is already in the pre-production stage.

He detailed that they are currently in the process of writing the script. Fans also would not have to wait long before the new movie lands on the big screen because they plan to start filming by the end of the year or by early 2018.

“It’s more of a how fast can we get our shit together,” he admitted via Collider.

Stahelski co-directed John Wick with David Leitch, but the latter did not sign up to John Wick 2 to direct Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde and, next, Deadpool 2Meanwhile, Stahelski is also currently busy with the reboot of Highlander. Will he return to direct John Wick 3?

He assured fans that he is still “super involved” in the sequel and he absolutely loves the property. It all boils down to his schedule.

“Currently I’m acting as prep director,” he explained. “Hopefully everything will work out time wise. Of course — I would love to…”

Go Big Or Go Home

However, despite the previous two movies’ success and the inevitable larger production budget, Stahelski has no plans to change what they already have planned. Fans likely will not see luxury cars falling out of an airplane or a replica of a famous landmark getting blown up. Stahelski wants to keep things as contained as the first movie.

“We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world,” he stated. Previous rumors claimed that the next movie is set in the Middle East.

The filmmaker believes that there are still a lot of nooks and crannies in the world of John Wick that has not been explored. So, instead of a spectacle of explosions, the movie is going to go deeper into the inner workings of New York.

“So rather than massive set pieces, I’d like to show you cooler and more intricate ones… I think it would be a mistake budget wise and creatively to just go big and blow up a freeway,” he explained. “That’s a comic book or a Bond gig.”

John Wick 3 definitely is not running out of stories. While the first movie was a complete story on its own, John Wick 2 ended with a cliffhanger that promises more actions and revelations.

John Wick‘s Past Life

One more thing that fans can expect from John Wick 3 will be more revelations about John Wick’s past. The second movie also explored the life of John Wick as an assassin (before he retired and got married).

“We’re very comfortable with where we want [John Wick] to go in the third one and what Keanu [Reeves] wants to do,” he said. “If you really watch the first and second one, there’s only one place it can go — so I’ll let you sort that out.

John Wick 2 will be available on Digital HD and DVD/Blu-Ray starting June 13.
