John Wick was a massive success when it came out in 2014, bagging an impressive $88 million at the global box office. An equally successful sequel was released in theaters earlier this year and, a third movie is already in development. Director Chad Stehlski previously revealed that a television series is also in development and, in a new interview, he revealed a bit more about the project.
The World of John Wick
While the first movie was all about introducing its hero and what he can do, the sequel was able to explore the underground world of the hired assassins of New York City. The planned television series which is being developed by Lionsgate will expand on the said network of assassins and introduce new characters that do not necessarily revolve around John Wick. The title of the new action series is The Continental.
“They’ve got a really good structure,” Stahelski told IndieWire. ” It’s very tied to the film [in that] it’s about the Continentals all over the world, how certain people come into that world, and what happens in relation to those people, which is cool.”
The last movie did create an entire world that centers around the network of assassins that operate in the city and around the world. Unfortunately, with the third movie being the conclusion of John Wick’s story, Stahelski cannot possibly explore the different aspects of their world on the big screen.
“You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier — you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects,” he explained, “ones that I’m a little limited by staying with my lead guy.”
He expressed that he would like to be involved in the development of the television series and, eventually, direct a few episodes.
Game of Thrones-like Battle Scenes
Even if Stahelski would not spearhead the project, he promises the same greatness in the spin-off. For the action scenes, he even cited HBO’s Game of Thrones as a touchstone.
“Look at ‘Battle of the Bastards’. As an action designer, I think that’s the best battle I’ve ever seen on TV,” he stated. Stahelski worked as a stunt coordinator prior to directing. “Granted, they’re the biggest budgeted show on TV right now, but could we do something interesting with John Wick with what we have? Yeah.”
He said he like to prove that television shows could have action scenes that are on par with movies. That he will be his great achievement, he commented.
Stehelski did create really cool actions scenes in John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2 despite not having the budget of blockbuster movies such as Avengers: Infinity War and Fate of the Furious. He also previously assured that he has no plans to make the third movie more explosive. Needless to say, the filmmaker and former stuntman have the capacity to create some of the most mind-blowing action scenes on TV on a limited budget.
John Wick Cameo and Chapter 3
However, the project will no longer be about John Wick. Stahelski shared that there are plans to bring Keanu Reeves to the television series, but he will not be at the center of the narrative. His character John Wick will only have a cameo to connect the movie to the television world.
This will not be the last that fans will see the retired assassin. John Wick: Chapter 3 is in development and, according to earlier reports, the movie will delve deep into the history of the hero and where he might be heading next.
In the meantime, John Wick: Chapter 2 which grossed over $166.8 million worldwide is now available for purchase in Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-Ray.
