Johnny Depp is known for playing many memorable roles. But the Pirates of the Caribbean star has now signed on to play a role that could prove to be one of his most successful ones.
Reports are confirming that Depp has been roped in to play a famous technology magnate in the movie titled King of the Jungle.
Johnny Depp as John McAfee
Variety reported that Depp has signed on to play the role of John McAfee who is better known as the creator of McAfee antivirus. According to the outlet, the movie will focus on the antivirus creator and how he cashed in his fortune and left everything to live in a jungle in Belize.
The movie, which is said to be a dark comedy, will also focus on the escapades that McAfee was involved in while living in the jungle. Given the kind of personality Depp has, this role seems to suit him best.
The outlet also reported the team that will be involved with the movie. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are writing the movie, while John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are co-directing.
As far as the producers are concerned, Condé Nast Entertainment’s Dawn Ostroff and Jeremy Steckler, Zaftig’s Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and Charlie Gogolak along with Epic Entertainment’s Joshua Davis will be producing the movie.
MadRiver Pictures’ Marc Butan and Epic Entertainment’s Joshuah Bearman will serve as the executive producers.
Depp’s comedy roles
Since King of the Jungle is said to be a dark comedy film, it will depend heavily on lead star Depp’s comic timing.
Known for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, Depp’s portrayal in the series has given him a bigger fanbase.
Screen Rant reported that other than his highly successful stint as Jack Sparrow, he has not had that much success in the genre. His other attempt at comedy with the movie Mortdecai did not fare well with fans.
However, the outlet noted that looking at the story and the plot of King of the Jungle, this could prove to be a good move for Depp. Other than this role, he has other roles lined up as well.
He will be reprising his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 2 next year and will also voice the role of Sherlock in Gnomeo and Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes.
The plot of the movie is based on an actual article, which was published in Wired magazine. According to reports, the movie is based on the article titled John McAfee’s Last Stand that was published in the magazine.
The movie will tell the true story of how technology magnate McAfee acquired a fortune because of his antivirus and what he end up doing with it.
The movie will also touch upon the time when McAfee along with his fortune simply left the modern world to live in a jungle in Belize. He created a compound in the jungle, which was known for sex, guns, and madness.
It is reported that another character will be joining, which will play an important role in the story. This character will be an investigator from the magazine who will reach Belize to interview the technology magnate.
However, the investigator’s notion of simply interviewing McAfee will turn into a nightmare, as he will also get pulled into McAfee’s escapades in the jungle. McAfee’s escapades will include increasing paranoia and murder amongst other things.
