Because of this, he sought a way to enter the fairy kingdom. The episode began with a flashback to Belgium, in 1815, at the Battle of Waterloo. There, Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel) managed to do enough magic to help win the battle. Afterwards, he settled back home in the country with Arabella (Charlotte Riley). He worked on the first book that he was going to publish, out of his three intended volumes. In the book, he planned to include several drawings of the King’s Roads that were created by the Raven King in the realm of Lost Hope.

Meanwhile, in London, Mr. Norrell (Eddie Marsan), after discovering that the government was afraid of the Raven King, as mobs of misplaced workers in the North were following a “ragged preacher” claiming that the Raven King would return to lead England. He managed to twist things around so that the government would help him stop Strange’s novel from being published. Because of this, Childermass (Enzo Cilenti) began to warn his master regarding the influence that Henry Lascelles (John Heffernan) now had over Norrel. Norrell ignored his most trustworthy servant.

The next morning, Strange was visited by a neighbor who told him that, strangely enough, he and several other neighbors had seen Arabella, walking around in the snow. However, they didn’t know that this was the Arabella that the Gentleman with the Thistle Down Hair (Marc Warren) had created out of a moss oak.

Later that night, Lady Emma Pole (Alice Englert) became distressed and began talking in what Mr. Honeyfoot (Brian Pettifer), who had a collection of old fairytales, realized were fairytales. Emma tried to warn them that something was going to happen to Arabella. Strange must be warned regarding the moss oak.

However, Arabella, after hearing a knock at the door, was escorted by Stephen Black (Ariyon Bakare), on the pretext that Emma was in danger, to the ballroom of the realm of Lost Hope.

For the next two days, Strange and his men searched for Arabella, only to have the moss oak version of herself enter. Much to his puzzlement, that version asked Strange if she was his wife. If he accepted her, which he did, as he had no idea that this wasn’t the real Arabella, which in turn meant that the real Arabella was now the Gentleman’s. At the ball, Emma tried to warn Arabella, but she was too much enchanted already by the Gentleman.

The next day, Strange discovered that the moss oak version of Arabella was dead. For one entire week, he tried bringing her back to life, and even wrote to Norrell, but received no response. After one week, Arabella’s brother persuaded him to let her go and to let her be buried. Afterwards, he went to London.

Meanwhile, Emma, urged on by Mr. Segundus (Edward Hogg) and Honeyfoot, went around the truth. It allowed Honeyfoot to pinpoint a fairytale about an unknown fairy called Colton Blue. After agreeing to write to Strange about it, they were interrupted by Vinculus (Paul Kaye). He told Stephen that he was the “nameless servant” destined to become king.

At London, after discovering from Childermass that Norrell was doing everything to stop the publishing of the tribute to his wife- his book, Strange broke into Norrell’s house, which led him to be jailed. There, he  decided to become mad in order to visit the fairy realm, and disappeared in his cell into a small puddle of water.
