While you were patiently waiting for the Justice League to finally come to the big screen in next year’s “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” DC Entertainment has been sneaking in another Justice League Movie. According to latest reports, DC has just fast tracked a “Justice League Dark” movie under executive producer, kaiju-expert, Guillermo Del Toro and Scott Rudin. Read on for more details.
But wait, what exactly is “Justice League Dark”? We all know the plain old Justice League (or the Justice League of America as they sometimes go by) from countless cartoons and bad movies. Superman, Batman, Wonder-Woman with Flash, Green Lantern and that Martian guy right?
Well, “Justice League Dark” is DC’s supernatural version of the Justice League, the ones who investigate paranormal phenomenon in the DC universe. Think of them as superpowered ghostbusters with way cooler jumpsuits. The team, born in DC comics with writer Peter Milligan, has gone through different iterations but comprises generally of the following:
John Constantine: English magician, charlatan, chain-smoker. More attitude than power. Portrayed famously badly by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 movie, “Constantine.”
Zatara Zatanna: American magician, Batman’s on-again-off-again girlfriend. Speaks backwards to do spells
Deadman: Ghost. Ex-acrobat. Possesses people’s bodies without consent.
Swamp Thing: Human-Plant, Elemental for all plant life on earth, almost as strong as Superman.
Demon Etrigan: A demon bonded into a human host. Breathes hellfire and destruction. Speaks in annoying rhyming couplets.
Frankenstein: Just Frankenstein. Pissed off. With a giant sword. (via Screen Rant)
And if that does not sound like an interesting roster for a superhero movie, we do not know what will. Academy award winning producer Scott Rudin (“No Country For Old Men”, “The Social Network”) has been brought on board, and the film will shoot in 2016.
The official log-line is being obviously kept under wraps for now, but according to sources “it involves a series of ancient tomes stolen by a madman hellbent on the destruction of humanity. When he learns of this, occult detective John Constantine seeks out a group of heroes that specialize in the mystic and arcane in order to save the world.” (via Tracking Board)
This movie will mark DC’s first foray to establish another bona fide superhero team in its upcoming universe. In the same way as Guardians and The Avengers co-habit in the MCU, DC will have its various Justice League incarnations, and also the villain team-up in Suicide Squad. Looks like the battle of super-hero franchises just entered its next phase.
