Zack Snyder has halted post-production work for Justice League. On Monday, the renowned filmmaker has announced that he is officially stepping down as the director of the upcoming movie to cope with the recent suicide of his 20-year-old daughter. His wife Deborah, who sits as a producer, will also step away from the movie.

What Of Justice League?

While the superhero ensemble movie has already wrapped up filming a few months ago, there is still plenty of work that needs to be done. It is currently still in post-production stage and additional footage needs to be shot.

But fans need not worry; the movie will be placed in equally capable hands. Warner Bros. also announced that Joss Whedon will take over.

Whedon has an extensive experience with big blockbuster superhero movies. Before signing up to DCEU to helm the Batgirl movie, the director was an important figure behind DC’s competitor, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He directed The Avengers in 2012 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Prior to that, he is known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse and Firefly.

The work for Justice League was put on hold for two weeks to allow Snyder and his family to cope with the immediate aftermath of the death of the director’s daughter, Amber Snyder. Warner Bros. also initially wanted to move the upcoming movie’s release date in order to give Snyder time to heal before he goes back to work. However, this decision was opposed by Snyder himself.

The sequel to the still-unreleased new movie has already been pushed back to give the director time to work on another project. Instead, Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie will be released on June 14, 2019.

While Snyder will pass the baton to Whedon who will oversee the filming of the additional scenes for Justice League, Warner Bros. Toby Emmerdale assured that the movie will not deviate from Snyder’s original vision. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, he shared that the scenes in question will not introduce new characters or important plot points.

“The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set,” he explained. “He’s handing the baton to Joss, but the course has really been set by Zack.”

Emmerdale added that he is confident that the movie will be great despite Snyder’s absence.

Autumn Snyder died by suicide at the age of 20 in March this year, but it did not grab the headlines because the family decided to keep it private. Only a small circle has been made aware of what happened.

The director was initially eager to get back to work on the movie after his daughter’s death. He thought that it could take his mind off of things. Eventually, however, he realized that his family needed him at home.

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it,” he said in a statement. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization … I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me.”

Autumn is Zack’s daughter from his first marriage. The young woman who was attending Sarah Lawrence also had a penchant for telling stories.  Deborah added that Autumn loved to write and has already finished a sci-fi novel that follows an outsider who had trouble fitting in.

While the director initially wanted to keep the tragedy a secret from the press, they decided to share it with the public in order to avoid rumors. “When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the Internet,” he added.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Amber Heard and Diane Lane. The movie will be released on Nov. 17.
