“House of Cards’” Kate Mara is reportedly testing in for Gareth Edwards’ standalone “Star Wars” spin-off pic, which is rumored to film in Mexico. Read on for more details on this story.
Kate Mara is the latest addition to the list of hopefuls for the female lead in Gareth Edwards’ “Star Wars” standalone film, according to Variety’s Justin Kroll. Kate’s sister, Rooney Mara, was earlier reported to be testing for the role, along with Felicity Jones and Tatiana Maslany. Kate is known for her role in Netflix’s “House of Cards” and is set to play Sue Storm in Josh Trank’s “Fantastic Four” reboot from Fox.
Moreover, the spin-off pic is rumored to shoot in Mexico. According to website Making Star Wars, a source from Pinewood Studios reports that the pic will have “more on-location shooting than” J. J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” with Mexico as one of its destinations, and will be shooting under the codename “Los Alamos.”
In addition, the reports say that the pic will be redesigning sets from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in order to save money.
“There are lots of cost cutting measures like that in place for the first spin-off film, most of the reshoot materials are to be saved when possible for this reason,” explained the site.
Past rumors indicate that the upcoming spin-off will be about Boba Fett and/or a young Han Solo, but recent reports suggest it is to be about a group of bounty hunters who plans to steal the first blueprints of the Death Star, set before the events of “A New Hope,” though nothing has been announced officially as yet.
“Godzilla” helmer Gareth Edwards is tapped to direct the standalone pic, while “X-Men: Days of Future Past’s” Simon Kinberg, who also serves as a consultant on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and writer and producer for the animated series “Star Wars Rebels,” is rumored to take over screenwriter Gary Whitta’s work, who has departed from the project. It is reported to be a “friendly split” between him and Lucasfilm.
Gareth Edwards’ “Star Wars” standalone pic is set to release on Dec. 16, 2016.
