While Katy Perry’s very public divorce from Russell Brand may have been painful and heart-rending, it did bring changes to her lifestyle that ultimately worked to her benefit at the end of it all.
During her interview with Alan Carr on Friday Dec. 20, the Wide Awake singer revealed she went through a three-month cleansing period, in which she had no alcohol, as part of her healing process.
“You know, I did a lot of different things,” the 29-year-old singer told Carr, as repored by the Daily Mail. “I surrounded myself with my good friends, I did this whole cleanse where I didn’t have any alcohol for three months—that was devastating—I did vitamins and supplements, and hikes and meditation and prayer.”
“I think at the end of it all, as much as the things I did, I think there was something cosmically happening that was looking out for me in some ways. But I was putting my best positive foot forward,” she added.
Although Katy is doing much better with beau John Mayer, she admits the breakup from her ex-husband really took a toll on her.
“It’s fun to laugh at it now. It wasn’t fun to laugh at it then,” the Unconditionally singer told Carr. “You know, I was going through a period where a lot of negative thoughts were entering my mind. Obviously they did not succeed, but I had my confidence kind of beaten down.”
In an earlier interview with Marie Claire’s January 2014 issue, Katy spoke about her post-breakup mentality. “I was, like, just eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that’s it,” she said. “There are two ways you can go: You can either nurture yourself or go destructive. I have gone down the destructive path before, and that didn’t work for me.”
