According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kelli Garner ("Pan Am," "My Generation") has landed the titular role in “Marilyn,” Lifetime’s upcoming miniseries about Marilyn Monroe. Read on for further details.
Garner joins a list of other actresses to have played Monroe including Megan Hilty, Uma Thurman and Katharine McPhee. Her credits include “Man of the House,” “The Aviator,” Bully,” “Taking Woodstock and “Thumbsucker.” She's represented by Gersh, John Carrabino Management and Hansen Jacobson.
Oscar winner Susan Sarandon will take on the role as Monroe’s psychologically sick mother. Her mother’s struggle with her own mental condition had profoundly affected Monroe’s life. Despite it, Monroe became a sensational sex symbol. She also starred in many commercially successful films including “The Asphalt Jungle” and “All About Eve” during the 1950s and early 1960s.
For “The Prince and the Showgirl,” she received a BAFTA Award nomination in 1957 and won a David di Donatello award. She received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in “Some Like It Hot” in 1959. Monroe's last accomplished motion picture was “The Misfits.”
“Marilyn” is based on the book “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe” written by J. Randy Taraborrelli. The four-hour miniseries promises to put in the picture Marilyn's personal struggles that the bombshell kept out of the spotlight. Stephen Kronish ("The Kennedys") has written the script and Laurie Collyer ("Sunlight Jr.") will direct the series. "Asylum'"s Jonathan Koch and Steven Michaels will executive produce alongside Kronish and Keri Selig.
"Marilyn" will focus on Marilyn's life as a frigid wife during her first marriage and as a fragile artist "who seeks the approval and protection of men." It was after her first and second marriage that she finally learned to carry herself on her own.
Lifetime also described the famed actress and sex symbol of her era.
She [Marilyn] becomes the face and voice of an era, yet wants most of all to be someone's mother and someone's little girl. She's the Marilyn you haven't seen before, the artist who, by masking the truth with an image, gives her greatest performance.
