In light of Angelina Jolie’s big reveal of her having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed due to a cancer scare and her family history of the said illness, other women have also stepped up to brave the procedure. This includes Kelly Osbourne as she reveals in her guesting in ‘The Talk’.
During an episode of ‘The Talk’ on Tuesday, March 24, talks turned unto Angelina Jolie’s New York Times article that revealed of her having some of her reproductive organs to greatly lessen the possibility of her having breast and ovarian cancer. In relation to this, guest Kelly Osbourne revealed that she has a mutation in the BRCA1 gene, which also makes her a high risk in having cancer herself.
Apparently, Osbourne found out about this when she and her siblings had a genetic testing as a precaution since their mother Sharon Osbourne was also found of the same gene and later had a double mastectomy procedure. And as it turned out, she did have it and now, she admitted that she plans to also have a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy someday, like Jolie did.
“I know that one day I will eventually have to do it too because if I have children, I want to be there to bring them up. I want to be there to support them in every way I can. It’s something I applaud Angelina for because she’s bringing attention to this, and people are now going to go out and get tested for it,” Osbourne said.
Sharon Osbourne was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2002. After two surgeries, she was later deemed to be cancer-free. However, upon her recovery, she found out through genetic testing that also carries a cancer gene similar to Jolie’s, risking her to breast cancer. Thus she had a double mastectomy on November 2012.
From here, one can see that Jolie’s decision to reveal her story has achieved its goal in spreading awareness among women. And now as many people applaud her bravery, fears turn into hopes for a healthier life and future.
