According to Deadline, Disney pushes the release of the sports drama “McFarland USA” three months later, moving the biopic from Nov. 21 to Feb. 20, 2015.
“McFarland, USA” is an upcoming sports drama pic starring Kevin Costner. It is based on the true events of a Latino high school track team from McFarland, California. Inspired by the 1987 true story, Costner stars as a school coach, Jim White, whose job-hopping leads him to a predominantly Latino high school where he struggles to find common ground until he notices his students’ exceptional running ability. He then forms a fledgling team of unlikely runners who bond to build not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
Costner has recently starred in another sports drama “Draft Day” as the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, who must decide what to do when his team acquires the number one draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. It is directed by Ivan Reitman, who is best known for his comedy work in the 1980s and 1990s, which includes the successful “Ghostbuster” series, “Kindergarten Cop,” “Six Days Seven Nights,” “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” and “No Strings Attached.” The film premiered in Los Angeles on April 7, 2014, followed by its United States release on April 11.
With its move to Feb. 20, 2015, it will face off against Relativity’s “Jane’s Got a Gun,” starring Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman and Open Road’s “The Gunman,” starring Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba.
Originally, the biopic would have squared off against “Hunger Games: Mockingjay” in its Thanksgiving weekend release.
“McFarland, USA” is directed by helmer Niki Caro, whose 2002 film “Whale Rider” gained critically praise and won a number of awards at international film festivals. It is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Mayhem Pictures’ Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, whose credits include “Million Dollar Arm,” “Invincible” and “Secretariat.”
