Kevin Feige Explains ‘Doctor Strange’s’ Powers and Casting Choice
MARVEL/Doctor Strange

Next year will be a big year for MARVEL characters in general. Aside from MARVEL Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War,” the X-Men are getting another film in their franchise, and the popular “Deadpool” is also getting his own film treatment. Many are also looking forward to MARVEL’s “Doctor Strange” as Doctor Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) powers are unlike any that has been seen on screen before.

In a series of recent interviews that MARVEL Studios president Kevin Feige had with Entertainment Weekly regarding MARVEL’s upcoming film, “Doctor Strange,” Feige decided to elaborate a little on Doctor Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) powers. He did this as Strange’s magical abilities are something that hasn’t been seen yet in the MARVEL Cinematic Universe.

True to his comic book counterpart, Strange will be shown to be capable of many things, thanks to his knowledge of the magical arts, and as he has a little help from the two relics that he uses- the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto.

The red cloak that Strange wears is the Cloak of Levitation, which allows the Sorcerer Surpreme to fly around a little bit. The Eye of Agamotto, which in the comics, is usually used as a clasp for his cloak, this time around, has a very interesting feature that hasn’t been seen before.

According to Feige, the film version of the Eye of Agamotto will have the ability to manipulate probability and time. This, of course, makes fans wonder if Feige just hinted that the Eye contains the Time Gem, one of the two Infinity Stones in the MARVEL Cinematic Universe that hasn’t popped up yet.

If one can recall, the Mind Gem appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the Reality Gem appeared in “Thor: The Dark World,” the Power Gem appeared in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and the Space Gem appeared in “Avengers,” leaving the Time and Soul Gem unaccounted for.

Feige also mentioned that Strange has the ability to create portals to different dimensions and can cast “mandalas of light” that can protect and can be used as a weapon. He also confirmed that the spells in Strange’s world will continue to sound just as complicated as the spells he uses in the comics.

In another report on Entertainment Weekly, Feige revealed that they always wanted Cumberbatch to portray Stephen Strange. However, as Cumberbatch began having more and more projects, they tried to opt for different actors such as Ewan McGregor, Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, Jake Gyllenhaal and Matthew McConaughey. However, in the end, MARVEL Studios decided to stick with Cumberbatch, and created a new production schedule to accommodate the busy actor’s own schedule.

Do you think that Benedict Cumberbatch is the only actor who could portray Doctor Stephen Strange? Do you think that his Eye of Agamotto is the Time Gem? Where do you think the Soul Gem will pop up? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
