“Orange is the New Black” (OITNB) introduced a few new and interesting faces in its newest season. One of these was the character named Brook Soso, an Asian American who arrived at the Litchfield prison (Season 2 Episode 3 “Hugs Can Be Deceiving”) for being a political activist, and immediately, she stood out.
The character was one very talkative chick that the rest of the inmates found annoying. Worse, she hardly took showers and stunk. In one scene (Season 2 Episode 8 “Appropriately Sized Pots”), Soso was forced to take a bath, even while protesting about allowing people to live naturally and citing that deodorants were toxic and cancerous.
This characterization was one of the highlights to Soso’s antics, and the actress playing her, Kimiko Glenn, disclosed some similarities with her alter ego.
“I actually don’t wear deodorant in life,” said Glenn while speaking with Redditors in their regular Ask Me Anything (AMA) forum.
Glenn also shared that she put lavender oil in her underarms. She admitted that this practice was unusual. It all started since the “smelly Brook Soso” deal. Glenn stopped using deodorants and showered often then started experimenting with various organic deodorants such as lavender oil. She claimed that people always commented on how good she smells.
The actress impressed the group on Reddit too for being as chatty as her TV character. She also disclosed a lot of facets about working with the ensemble cast of OITNB, saying that the actresses have some similarities to the characters they play, except for a few. For instance, Glenn mentioned that Uzo Aduba was the least similar with her character. She described Uzo as “very composed and smart.” In addition, she referred to Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) as a “beautiful, caring and very smart actress,” very different from her character.
She described the set as having a fun vibe off-camera and expressed her admiration for Taylor Manning (Piper), the show’s lead star.
Meanwhile, the production of OITNB confirmed via Twitter that the show was filming for Season 3.
On the eve of Orange Is The New Black Season 2, the cast are hard at work back on the set of #OITNB Season 3. How freaking cool is that?
