Over the last week, she and her family had been vacationing on Oahu. However, that relaxing time turned scary when Klum had to race into the ocean as a riptide caught her son Henry, who is just seven years of age. Photos can be seen of Klum pulling Henry to safety and to shore.
She also was photographed helping to pull a nanny to safety from the same rip current. Her boyfriend was also photographed trying to catch his breath following the incident.
Klum who was interviewed later said she too was pulled into the ocean by the strong current of a large wave. However, she was able to pull herself out and think at once about her child and others in the water.
Following the incident, no injuries were reported. Lifeguards in the area believe the incident took place at Papailoa Beach. At the beach, a high-surf advisory had been posted and said waves could reach 10 to 15 feet because of strong north winds.
Papailoa is located in a remote area of the North Shore close to Haleiwa. It has only one public access, with limited parking in an area with restricted access and very expensive homes. There is a big potential for very large waves breaking on the beach, which causes the rip currents.
Klum’ heroic efforts were praised by lifeguards and rescue personnel and one lieutenant on the North Shore said Klum should be given an award for her actions.
