Dr. John Thackery is going to perform surgery on a woman he used to know intimately. Meanwhile, the rest of the hospital staff at the Knick each have personal hurdles to overcome. Read on to find out what viewers can expect from this episode. But first, a quick recap from last week.

Previously in the episode “Mr. Paris Shoes” (air date: Aug. 15, 2014), the newly installed electrical system at the Knick had malfunctioned, endangering the surgical procedures and creating hazardous accidents. Herman Barrow (Jeremy Bobb) was besieged with complaints from both the chief of surgery Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen) and the board, through Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance). Barrow’s problems, however, goes deeper than just fixing the utilities at the hospital because he used part of the hospital funds for his personal gain. He’s also being hounded by a loan shark.

Dr. Algernon Edwards (Andre Holland), meanwhile, has been outcast by the surgical team, so he’s working in post-operations only and holds an office in the hospital basement. Realizing that he could do more and being expertly trained in France, Dr. Edwards set up an unused part of the basement for patients of colour, who should be treated without prejudice. The hospital doesn’t know this yet.

Spoiler Alert: “The Knick” Season 1 Episode 3 “The Busy Flea” airs on Friday, Aug, 22, 2014 at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax.

In the next episode entitled “The Busy Flea,” Dr. Thackery is set to perform surgery on a former lover and to prepare for this, he asks his other surgeons Dr. Gallinger and Dr. Chickering to prepare well. They will practice on a pig.

Meanwhile, Dr. Edwards is still not accepted among his peers at the Knick. A bad day will bring Edwards to a local bar.  Barrows debt problems would still be hounding him and he will go to extreme measures to settle this, and Robertson, who was looking out for a friend’s daughter who’s sick with typhoid fever in the last episode, will have a real challenge ahead of her with this case. Her pleas about treating typhoid fever will have some results.

This episode was written by Jack Amiel & Michael Begler, with Steven Soderbergh as director.
