Previously on The Knick “Methods and Madness” (air date: Aug. 8, 2014), viewers were introduced to the surgeons, the nurses and the rest of the hospital staff at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York. The team of surgeons, headed by newly promoted chief of surgery, Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen), had to do an emergency operation on a patient, as a result of post-surgery septicemia. Thackery performed a procedure on him that was never before tried on any other human being, and fortunately, he did it successfully.
Deputy chief surgeon and newcomer to the hospital, Dr. Algernon Edwards (André Holland), was supposed to consider leaving the Knick as he wasn’t wanted based on his skin color. But because of what he saw with Dr. Thackery’s work, he decided to stay so he could learn and become a better surgeon.
Dr. Thackery, however, has a vice. He’s addicted to cocaine and opium. Despite his brilliance, he also has a bit of an attitude.
According to Deadline the first episode of “The Knick” opened to decent ratings with a total of 354,000 viewers on Cinemax. It did considerably better when it aired the following night on HBO with 533,000 viewers. The debut ratings, however, are lower than the debut ratings of “Banshee,” Cinemax’s very first original drama series. “Banshee” also debuted on a Friday night in January 2013.

The second episode entitled “Mr. Paris Shoes” will have Thackery frustrated over the newly installed hospital electrical system as it disrupts his procedures. The day grows worse as the surgical team has no other cadavers to work on, so Thackery asks Herman Barrow (Jeremy Bobb), the hospital’s administrator, to provide them with bodies. How can they perfect the surgical procedures if they cannot practice on these? Patients are dying, and the team needs to come up with solutions. Dr. Edwards offer one that he has apparently learned while studying in France, but Thackery did not want to validate this.
Elsewhere, there is an outbreak, and the hospital has to tend to many patients with typhoid fever, with Sister Harriet (Cara Seymour) doing the unthinkable, and Edwards working around his duties.
The latest episode is written by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, with Steven Soderbergh as director.
