The Knick” Season 1 Episode 8 “Working Late a Lot” will air on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax. There’s a new doctor whom Dr. Thackery feels is a threat to his reputation as a surgical master in New York. Meanwhile, some staff members of the Knick testify against “Typhoid Mary.” But before the details on that, let’s go back to what happened in the last episode.

In “Get the Rope” (air date: Sept. 29, 2014), a riot took place at the Knick. It was instigated by the police and the Irish, as one of them was stabbed by a black man who saw that his girlfriend was being harassed. The incident became an issue about races.

As the mob grew and grew in front of the hospital, the staff inside began to operate on the man who was stabbed. But he didn’t make it, thus angering his mother, leading her to incite the mob to be violent against the “darkies.”

Black people everywhere were getting beaten and the hospital continued to receive black patients who were bleeding all over. The situation became too much to handle that Dr. Thackery (Clive Owen) thought it would be best to transfer them to a safer place, as the mob has already breached hospital premises. Every staff on the Knick pulled their weight to make sure that no one would be harmed during the transfer.

They found a safe haven in a black hospital a few blocks off. It was managed by a black doctor whom Dr. Edwards (Andre Holland) knew from Harvard. They all kept treating the patients well into the night. When it was time to leave, Thackery offered to bring Nurse Lucy (Eve Hewson) home, and the two ended up sleeping and indulging in cocaine together.

In this episode, it was also shown that the hospital finally discovered the secret clinic Edwards was running underground. This displeased Barrow (Jeremy Bobb) but impressed Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance). Speaking of Cornelia, she and Edwards also had a romantic moment that night, after the riots have died down. They went back to his makeshift clinic and kissed on one of the beds.

Spoiler Alert: “The Knick” Season 1 Episode 8 “Working Late a Lot” will air on Friday, Oct. 3 at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax.

There’s a shortage of cocaine in the city and this is making Dr. Thackery feeling a bit on the edge. Worse, there’s this Jewish surgeon, Dr. Zinberg (Michael Nathanson), who is currently making waves in New York. Dr. Thackery is threatened that Zinberg would steal the spotlight from him at the Surgical Society conference where they are both going to make a presentation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chickering proceeds with wooing Nurse Lucy. At the same time, his father keeps asking him when he’ll finally move to a different hospital. He and the health inspector, along with Cornelia, will go to court for the hearing of Mary Mallon aka “Typhoid Mary.” They will testify why she should remain quarantined.

And finally, Dr. Gallinger struggle with helping his wife, who is still grieving for the loss of their daughter.

The episode is written by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, with Steven Soderbergh as director.
