The retired Mr. Wayne has been indulging in Hollywood excesses. Christian Bale is back on the screen in a new Terrence Malick romantic fantasy, “Knight of Cups.” The first trailer of the 2012 film has just debuted, and boy it does feature a lot of excesses.
In “Knight of Cups”: whose title refers to a card from the tarot, Christian Bale is a disillusioned screenwriter, haunted by deaths in his close family. And true to form to his millionaire playboy persona as Bruce Wayne, he dives headlong into a world of hollywood debauchery. And there is a lot of it. Scenes of revelry and love-making, and a whole lot of naked women, are interspersed with darker tones: a leashed man dragged through a lawn, Bale confined to a cage as party-goers carouse around him. A voice over tells us, “No one cares about reality anymore.”
The film also features Cate Blanchett, apparently as Bale’s weary love interest, and Natalie Portman, also seemingly as Bale’s love interest. Given that it is a Terrence Malick film, it is rather hard to understand what it truly going on, but the broad strokes seem to be about a man in search of redemption. Who goes to an aquarium at some point.
Terrence Malick, whose best known recent work is the stirring science fiction mind-bender “Tree of Life”, actually made “Knight of Cups” in 2012. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and is finally coming to theaters on March 15, 2016.
Here is the official synopsis, via wikipedia:
“A screenwriter living in Los Angeles tries to make sense of the strange events occurring around him. While he’s successful in his career, his life feels empty. Haunted by the death of one brother and the dire circumstances of the other, he finds temporary solace in the Hollywood excess that defines his existence. Women provide a distraction to the daily pain he must endure. And every encounter that comes his way brings him closer to finding his place in the world”
