Kobe Bryant, also known as “Black Mamba” of the Los Angeles Lakers has announced his impending retirement at the end of this season, much to the dismay of many sports fans.

The 37-year-old, who has been part of the Lake Show since 1996, has helped his team with five championships within the span of his career of almost 20 years.

During his announcement on Sunday, Bryant conveyed through a first-person narrative entitled “Dear Basketball,” that the sport “gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream/And I’ll always love you for it.” “But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer”. “This season is all I have left to give. My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye. “And that’s OK. I’m ready to let you go.” (via ESPN)

Who could better empathize than a fellow great athlete, who has also retired from a sport that he played for almost all his life? We’re talking about ex LA Galaxy skipper, David Beckham.

According to Bleacher Report, Beckham was among the people who paid homage to the two-time NBA Finals MVP. Beckham, who completed five years in Los Angeles with the Galaxy, took to Instagram and posted a snap with the text, “Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.”

We can recall that back in 2011, Beckham was vocal about his love for Bryant on his Facebook page, admitting it was a privilege to watch him play from the floor.

The former England captain, who can still sometimes be seen courtside at Lakers games, added a heartfelt tribute to Kobe Bryant, giving credit to the “Black Mamba” for his motivation to succeed and his gift to encourage kids. One sports icon pays his respects to another.

Kobe Bryant has inspired a lot of young people to reach for their dreams, and with that we leave you with a quote from Bryant, which somehow sums up how he dealt with the hardships he encountered in his basketball career and who knows, maybe in his personal life, as well: “Everyting negative – pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.”
