The song titled “Till It Happens to You,” which has been co written by Lady Gaga, is very significant to her considering the fact that it shows the journey of a rape survivor. It highlights the feelings that a woman goes through after the act including feelings of guilt and shame. She in a way try to portray her own life as a rape survivor and how she felt after the act and what all she went through and how she emerged as a strong person after going through a riot of emotions and events after the incident.

Earlier this year, in an interview with Howard Stern, the singer mentioned that the horrible incident happened when she was all of 19 years at the hands of someone who was double her age. She revealed that after a lot of emotional, physical and mental therapy, she can laugh about the incident which bogged her down totally then. The incident was there as an ugly secret with her for 7 years, before she could reveal it to anyone.

She was unsure about her feelings and fought hard not to blame herself or think it was her fault. However, initially, the singer had blamed herself and thought that the reasons for the attack were her provocative dresses and persona. While mentioning that she was not only under mental distress but was also physical distress too, she said, “You re-experience it through the years after it; it can trigger patterns in your body of physical distress.” She added, “that one incident changed my life forever.” But she still suffers from depression quite often.

As told to HollywoodLife.com, Lady Gaga felt that while singing the song,”Till it Happens to You” for documentary “The Hunting Ground,” it was important that the person be someone who had experienced such incident at some point in order to bring out the best emotions. Gaga also believes that the song has more to it than just portraying the emotions of a rape survivor. It also talks about the message of encouragement and hope that the video sends out to the survivors who are going through such emotional turmoil that have left them shameful and defeated.

Gaga’s fans have been expressing their admiration and gratitude to the singer when she opened up about it in TimesTalk Panel. While some admired her courage to share the painful experience, others said that her soothing words gave them hope and courage to emerge victorious from their own experience.

Not only this, the actress along with her mother launched an organization “Emotion Revolution” which focuses on the positive aspects of life. It helps and works with those who have damaging emotions because of some reasons and direct them to lead a positive life. Gaga says she understands the emotions that such people go through as she has gone through it herself and always wondered why, “that cloud was there at all.” Her main objective is to help such people accept the difference that each one has and love themselves.

Lady Gaga who was born in Manhattan is a multi talented person. She is not only a singer but also a dancer, fashion designer, actress, song writer and philanthropist. She has received many awards and reorganizations. The recent one being 2015 Woman of the year presented by Billboard. The vast achievement that she has under her belt defines who she is and to just define her based on her rape experience would not only be undermining her but also not recognizing her multiple qualities. While being interviewed by Howard Stern she had added that she does not want the experience to define her.
