“The Last Ship” Season 2 Episode 8 “Safe Zone” aired on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. In this episode, Commander Thomas “Tom” Chandler (Eric Dane) set about in trying to turn the new President of the United States, President Jeffrey Michener (Mark Moses) to their side while gathering some much needed intelligence regarding the submarine in this character driven episode. Read on to learn more about this episode.
While Lieutenant Carlton Burk (Jocko Sims) escorted the new President of the United States, President Jeffrey Michener (Mark Moses), to a room to be briefed. Commander Thomas “Tom” Chandler (Eric Dane) informed Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) that Niels Sorenson (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) was currently in a coma. It was due to the injuries that he had sustained before coming aboard the USS Nathan James.
Afterwards, Executive Officer Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin) showed Michener the video recordings left to them by the then surviving Speaker of the House, the Secretary of the Navy, and Dr. Julius Hunter’s (Timothy Landfield) recording. He briefed them of their activities, and how Sean Ramsey’s people had deliberately been thwarting their mission, which was why Chandler had rescued him from their clutches. He then left two flash drives on the table for him with the laptop that he left behind. One of the flash drives contained all of Chandler’s logs while the other contained all of Rachel’s work on the ship. Slattery then left the room and joined Chandler and Master Chief Hugh Jeter (Charles Parnell), who had been watching the President see how he reacted to Slattery.
After a few moments, Michener inserted a flash drive that he had snuck aboard. He replayed several messages of Sean’s, which reminded him of his belief in Sean Ramsey’s (Brian F. O’Byrne) cause.
Chandler then entered the room, took the laptop. He asked Michener to convince him that what he and Sean were doing was in the best interests of the United States and the world.
Michener then told Chandler how he had gone to Tallahassee in Florida under orders of the President. He did that in order to create safe zones for those who haven’t been infected yet, how he watched his family die in front of him, and how he had stumbled upon the Immunes after weeks of trying to kill himself by trying to get infected, and how the Immunes had given him a sense of hope, of purpose and of a future, in which he would help rebuild the nation by ensuring that the strong survive, and the weak naturally die out. He then told Chandler that the submarine was going to New Orleans as it was the best place to begin rebuilding the nation. He revealed that the submarine, as they had suspected, wasn’t moving as they had been badly damaged by USS Nathan James.
Later that night, in Michener’s new quarters, in order to gain his trust, and to turn him to their side, Chandler shared to him on how he had found his own family, and where they were now. It allowed Michener to share how he had watched his own family die. However, they were interrupted by Jeter, as they had discovered that the Immunes were broadcasting a message that the Nathan James was dangerous and didn’t have the cure.
Afterwards, Chandler looked for Michener after discovering something in the White House confidential files and discovered that Michener had slit his wrists.
After waking up, Chandler told Michener that he knew that Michener had been blaming himself for the deaths of everyone in Tallahassee. Michener’s son had been their “patient zero”, and had subscribed to Sean’s cause as it gave him redemption. Michener then revealed that he, upon the request of his wife, had killed his infected daughters before they bled out to death. Chandler then told him that he wasn’t the only one who had done bad things and that helping them, and leading the United States in the right way could be his way of achieving redemption. Because of this, he agreed to help them.
Afterwards, he handed over the flash drive to Slattery. He was horrified to learn that Sean was trying to infect children using a teddy bear soaked with the virus.
He was then shown into his new, fully operational quarters, with the seal and logo of the President of the United States. He then thanked Chandler for not giving up on him and saluted Chandler after Chandler saluted him.
