“The Last Ship” Season 1 Episode 9 “Trials” aired on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. Dr. Rachel Scott enlisted six volunteers for the human trials of the vaccine. They endured different symptoms with fatal consequences. Elsewhere, Chandler’s family has been shown as alive and surviving the plague. But how long will they remain virus-free? Find out more about this episode in the recap below.
The crew of USS Nathan James started clearing out Dr. Scott’s (Rhona Mitra) laboratory, while setting up the appropriate chambers for the human trials. Commander Chandler (Eric Dane) said that he might volunteer for this, which his XO nixed, saying that the ship needed their captain. The volunteers knew that there would be risks with these trials, one that could lead to death, but a lot of them still wanted to be part of it. After a series of questions and tests, Dr. Scott ended up choosing the master chief (Charles Parnell), Lt. Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling), Tex (John Pyper-Ferguson), the chief engineer (Marissa Neitling) and two other servicemen.
The six were administered the vaccine, and the first few hours seemed to go without any incident. However, little by little, symptoms started showing up, aside from the usual fever and fatigue. Kara had an epileptic attack. Tex had rashes. The chief engineer couldn’t control her muscles, and then later, she became delirious just like the master chief. Maya, one of the servicemen, actually died during the trials from a heart attack.
As the trials were going on, Captain Chandler and XO Slattery (Adam Baldwin) didn’t leave the lab and watched over the six faithfully.
Dr. Tophet (Sam Spruell) and Dr. Scott brainstormed and dug up what else they knew about the virus from their previous testings, but they also found out that Kara had her reaction because she was pregnant with Lt. Danny Green’s (Travis Van Winkle) baby. Fearing the worst, Captain Chandler allowed the servicemen to come to the trials to visit the volunteers. Some cheered them on from behind the protective set-up. Green, however, was allowed to go inside wearing a protective suit, as Kara seemed to be exhibiting the worst reactions.
At the last minute, Dr. Scott figured out what was missing from the vaccine; and in finding this, she apparently also found the cure. Not only was she able to create a medicine for immunization, she also created medicine for the virus, meaning, anyone who’s still sick from it and who has not been immunized has the chance of getting better.

Meanwhile, back home in the United States, Chandler’s family, including his father, were shown as alive and apparently not yet plagued by the virus. But as the world around them is chaotic, they have to keep a low profile to make sure that they do not encounter any untoward incident with other survivors. In one such encounter, Chandler’s wife unknowingly exposed herself to the virus, but still got home safely to her family. Will her husband get to her in time? Chandler’s father was also seen trying to contact his son’s ship through the ham radio. Will the crew catch on to his message?
This episode didn’t have a lot of the action scenes as the previous ones, but it did lay out the groundwork for what’s to come in the season finale happening on Aug. 24, 2014.
