Both history and real life true stories have always done well when it comes to television, which can be attested to by the first run of the television adaptation of Alex Haley’s epic and iconic novel, “Roots.” However, it seems like the upcoming adaptation of the book will be giving the original a run for its money as the event miniseries has just snagged its lead actor, in the person of Laurence Fishburne. According to a report on Deadline, Fishburne will be starring in the A & E Networks’ miniseries remake based on “Roots: The Saga of an American Family” as none other than Alex Haley.
According to TV Line, the miniseries will consist of around eight episodes, and Deadline reports that the event miniseries will be broadcasted simultaneously on Lifetime, History, and A&E sometime next year.
The novel, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family, written by Haley.” It tells the story of the an American family throughout the decades, and who originated from a man named Kunta Kinte. He had been captured as a slave in Gambia, and suffered the horrors of slavery in colonial America. Later on, the family brave through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War together, all the way until they eventually became emancipated.
According to the report, this adaptation will be getting more scenes directly from the book. It will be more complete than the previous attempt, which according to TV Line, garnered several wins at the Emmys, and got around thirty Emmy nominations.
Fishburne is a renowned actor who has been active both on the small and big screen. His television projects include NBC’s “Hannibal,” ABC’s “Black-ish” and CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
