Meanwhile, Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) learned some surprising news about herself. Read on to learn more about the conclusion to the season premiere.
The episode began with Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) trying to get into Dr. Carl Rudnick’s (Jeffrey Mays) house, but was stopped by Defense Attorney Rita Calhoun (Elizabeth Marvel), who told them to get a warrant first.
Olivia and Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) then paid a visit to Dr. Greg Yates (Dallas Roberts) at Green Haven as they believed that he had told Susie Frain (Mary Bacon) to blackmail Rudnick with the photo of him posing as Lena Grunwald, the fiancée that he had killed.
However, there, they discovered from Yates that Susie had been pregnant with his child.
Afterwards, Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino) and Rollins went to one of Rudnick’s apartments that he had rented out disguised as Teresa Fish. There, under the floor paper, they discovered blood and hair of Rachel Groves, his latest victim. The pair then headed over to Syracuse, where he had been spotted shoplifting, and dressed as a woman. After chasing down a bus that he had boarded in an attempt to flee to Canada, they arrested him, and made their way back to New York.
On the way, they stopped at a diner, where Carisi, while guarding the bathroom door for Rudnick, overheard him talking to himself that he might have killed Susie.
Back in New York, they were able to find his car, which had traces of Susie’s blood.
At the morgue, Dr. Melinda Warner (Tamara Tunie) told Olivia that she was going to have to reexamine all of the cases that Rudnick had handled, as it seemed that he had also tampered with evidence then, as one of the Jane Does’ he had examined was Teresa Fish.
However, this placed Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) in a difficult position as this meant that Yates might end up getting freed.
Because of this, Barba sent Rollins to talk to him, only for her to leave shocked as Yates told her that he knew that she was pregnant which she later confirmed via a pregnancy test.
At the squad room, it turned out that Carisi had known, and suggested that she should tell Olivia, which she did after taking the stand for a while during the trial. Olivia offered her full support, but warned her that she was going to be placed on restrictive duty.
Meanwhile, Barba found it difficult to get the jury to side with him, especially as they made it seem as if Yates and Susie had colluded against him, and as they tried to convince them that Susie had been killed in self defense, Rudnick himself took the stand.
However, while going over all of the precincts recording, Carisi managed to catch Rudnick talking to himself while waiting for Rita, in which he admitted to killing Rachel Groves, and began the plot to kill Susie Frain.
After that, he pled guilty to the murders of Rachel and Susie, but not for Lena’s murder.
Later, at Green Haven, Yates revealed that he had helped Rudnick with that one, and told Rollins that he feels that he and her unborn child had a strange connection with each other. He then warned her that she would visit him again soon.
Inside the prison mess hall, Rudnick met up with Yates, and told him that they had a “lot of catching up to do.”
