“Law & Order: SVU” Season 16 Episode 18 “Devastating Story” aired on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 9:00 PM. In this episode, the Special Victims Unit investigated a crime that happened on the campus of a university, which quickly became muddled after the victim, who had become the face of a movement worldwide, began changing her story. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her foster son, baby Noah, watching America’s Worst Crimes. On the show, Skip Peterson (Rob Morrow) told the story of a girl he called “Jane”, who had been gang raped at a fraternity house at Hudson University after going out on a date with one of its members. Later, after “Jane” herself gave a statement on television, Olivia was instructed to begin an investigation on it.
At the precinct, Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino) informed them that no complaint had been filed to the police in December, when it had happened. However, Olivia wasn’t surprised as Hudson University had ignored her. Because of this, Carisi and Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) went to Skip, who directed them to Professor Dillon (Laura Fraser), who had put him in touch with “Jane” and her story. Later, as “Jane” refused to come forward, Olivia paid a visit to President Roberts (Kathleen Chalfant), who told her that the student had told her that she did sleep, consensually, with another student, and the other student said the same thing. However, Olivia and Carisi, who had decided to try his luck again on campus, came across Professor Dillon’s rally against rape culture in universities where Heather Manning (Ally Ionnides) informed them that she was Jane.
At the precinct, Amanda and Olivia took down Heather’s statement, while Professor Dillon helped her on. She told them that Brian Mackey (Derek Goh), her date, had pulled her into his room, where other members of his hockey team, Lance Biscone (Josh Caras), Zach Franklin (Marley Ficalora), and Connor Howell (Derek Klena), were waiting, and they had took turns raping her, and had used a hockey stick on her. Afterwards, they threw beer cans at her, and she hadn’t told her parents as they were currently in Africa, and told them that she could give them her underwear, which was given back to her by Connor in class.
Because of this, they went to the fraternity house, and after talking to the boys, who claimed that only Brian had had slept with Heather, they got their DNA. After finding a Connor’s video of them throwing cups at her as she left the house, and after finding Connor’s and Brian’s DNA on Heather’s underwear, they brought them in, except for Zach, who was currently in Cuba.
Inside the precinct, Lance told Carisi that Connor, who was denying that he had slept with Heather, had been in the room as well. However, Connor claimed that Heather had come onto him after she had slept with Brian. However, as all three turned down the waiver of arraignment, they were arrested and arraigned.
Later, they discovered that Heather was going to rallies and giving statements that contradicted what she told them, as she now claimed that there had been six boys and not four. Zack, who had returned to America, then told LMZ that he had been playing at a live televised soccer match during the time of the assault. Skip also ended up taping a retraction to his story.
Because of this, they brought in Heather and Professor Dillon, and talked to them separately. It turned out that she might have consensually slept with Brian, while she was drunk. She then passed out and woke up to find Connor raping her.
Meanwhile, it turned out that Dillon had told Heather that she might have been gang raped, as she had passed out, and that Dillon didn’t care about the facts, as she only cared that this might be the one story that would stop rape culture on campuses forever.
Afterwards, Heather told Olivia that Connor had indeed raped her, but Olivia told her that it was too late to anything now.
At court, Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) dropped all of the charges against the boys.
Later, Olivia met with President Roberts, and apologized for the way she had spoken to her earlier. Roberts then told her that she could have gotten the truth from Heather if she hadn’t intimidated her with a lot of questions. Olivia then told her that the case had set back the clock for rape culture on campuses back thirty years.
