The British black comedy series “Mad Dogs” is getting an American adaptation, and it will be released on Amazon Prime. Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) is on hand to run the series and the show just completed casting its four lead stars. Read on for more details about this news story.
“Mad Dogs” follows four frat brothers who go on a holiday in Belize to meet up with another friend from college. When they get to their luxury vacation destination, a murder takes place in the villa, leaving the group confused and unaware of what is really going on. A gang lord comes after the four men, deepening the conspiracy further. The show ran from 2011 to 2013 on Sky1 in the United Kingdom.
The American remake, which will follow the same premise, was first developed by Shawn Ryan and Sony Television for the cable network FX in 2013, before it received a pilot order from Amazon’s streaming service. Ryan and FX have previously worked together when the cable network ran Ryan’s award-winning series “The Shield” for five seasons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), production has already completed casting of the four male lead characters with Steve Zahn, Romany Malco, Ben Chaplin and Michael Imperioli.
Zahn will play Cobi, who is about 40 years old, married and working as a financial adviser. Cobi is described as an amusing guy who, despite his age, still appears like he is younger. He keeps an Abercrombie wardrobe and has blond highlights to boot.
Chaplin will play Joel, who suffers from depression brought about by his feelings of lacking in fulfillment in life. He’s also the oldest in the group. Joel and Cobi also have a different history together, as Cobi ended up marrying Joel’s former girlfriend.
Malco will play Gus, the attorney, who has recently lost his license to practice and is on the final phase of his divorce.
Imperioli will play Lex, described as a loose cannon, who can never keep it together in his life and lives from paycheck to paycheck. Lex surprises his friends, however, when he becomes the one most in control and able to deal with the trouble the four best friends get themselves into in Belize.
Imperioli, by the way, was the last lead actor to be cast for this project.
The American production of “Mad Dogs” will also bring in Cris Cole to work alongside Ryan as writer and producer. Cole is the creator of the British original. The pilot episode will be directed by McDougall.
