“The Leftovers” is HBO’s upcoming television series based on Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same name. This drama series is created by Perrotta himself and Damon Lindelof and directed by Peter Berg. It has a good line up of cast starting with Justin Theroux, Liv Tyler, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston and Ann Dowd. Read on for MNG’s “The Leftovers” preview.
According to Entertainment Weekly’s (EW) Inside TV, “The Leftovers” will premiere on June 15, 2014 at 10:00 p.m. ET.
The Week reported that “The Leftovers” takes place in a “Rapture-like event.” Apparently, the plot of the said book to TV series adaptation is about the disappearance of two percent of the population of earth. ” The Leftovers” highlights the ones who were “left” behind in a town in New York after 140 million people were wiped out. What’s unique about this show is that it keeps us guessing since the show is not presenting ongoing supernatural phenomena or we don’t see any dragons like what we see in “Game of Thrones.”
In another Entertainment Weekly’s (EW) Inside TV report, “The Leftovers” co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof has revealed some details about the show, including his decision to make it after the successful TV series “Lost.”
“When Lost was ending, the two questions were: ‘What are your feelings about the ending of Lost?’ And ‘What’s next?’ The way I was answering the ‘What’s next?’ question was, ‘I don’t really want to think about it right now — I just want to enjoy this process,’ but the truth was ‘I don’t know if I can ever do another television show again because I’m so terrified that it’ll be just so much less than Lost,’ and I didn’t quite know any classy way of articulating that idea,” said Lindelof in the EW report.
“Stephen King wrote a review of The Leftovers, which he described as the best episode of The Twilight Zone that had never been shot. I was a Perotta fan. I read Little Children and The Abstinence Teacher and just on the premise alone [of The Leftovers]. I was completely and totally engaged by this idea. I ran and got the book immediately and I got maybe 50 pages in before I decided: This should be a television show and I need to collaborate with Tom [Perrotta, who is an exec producer and co-wrote the pilot with Lindelof] on that show. It took a year for things to sort themselves out but there was never any doubt as to like, ‘Should this be my next project?’ It was love at first sight,” explained Lindelof to EW.
“The Leftovers” also focuses on the sheriff’s role played by Justin Theroux as Kevin Garvey who’s trying to keep the town in order and keeping the people sane. Everyone is expecting him to solve the problem that it puts him in a lot of pressure. Even if he’s already falling apart just like everybody else, he has to keep it together and put on a brave face.
And that’s “The Leftovers” preview. Take a peak inside “The Leftovers” by watching the trailer below and you will discover that it’s as mysterious as “Lost,” but hopefully not too mysterious that the viewers will also get lost wondering what the show really is about and what is happening in it. There’s a hint of mystery to the show, probably something we haven’t seen before which makes it exciting to watch!
