Leonardo DiCaprio has always stayed away from sequels and prequels. He has not appeared in sequels since 1991’s “Critters 3” in which he had a minor role. He has always picked roles that are off-beat and somewhat out of the ordinary. He has stayed away from superhero movies too, despite being offered some of the meatiest roles in the business.
He stands out as distinctive, being the only Hollywood A-lister to shy away from both franchise films and superhero tent-peg roles. He was recently asked by Variety that why did he shy away from these roles even though he knew that they were money churners and long term investments with big returns.
He told Variety that he doesn’t refuse to work in sequels and being offered a good one, he might certainly look into it, but all his films tend to be individual works of art. “To me, every movie that I’ve done has been its own piece of individual art. That’s not to say I wouldn’t do something that has sequels. Some of the greatest movies in the world — ‘The Godfather’ — have had sequels. ‘The Godfather 2’ is fantastic,” he said, citing an example.
Screen Rant reports that in the past, Leonardo DiCaprio had been offered roles in franchise films that have gone on to be major blockbusters, but he chose not to do them. He was offered the role of Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s millennial blockbuster Spiderman and he was considered for the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars trilogy of the nineties. He was even considered for the role of Robin in the Batman series. But he chose to stay away from it.
He is going to appear in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant” next. The gritty screenplay will see DiCaprio fight the elements as he tries to survive a winter wasteland. Variety reports that during their interview, Alejandro G. Inarritu was also present and joked, “We’re planning ‘The Revenant 2,” as DiCaprio rolled his eyes. “That would be funny. Pre-production starts tomorrow.”
