Recently convicted murderer William Balfour learned his sentence on Tuesday. Balfour was convicted in May of shooting and killing actress Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother. He killed the two after breaking into their home in a jealous range. He was also found guilty of killing the seven-year old nephew of Hudson. Balfour was given a life sentence by the judge on Tuesday for the crimes. The judge said that Balfour’s soul was as cold as the arctic night.
Balfour received three life sentences to run consecutively with there being no chance of receiving parole. He also was sentenced to an additional 120 years for his act of home invasion and aggravated kidnapping. Prior to the sentencing, the judge said Balfour’s soul was just a barren dark space.
During the hearing, Hudson frequently wiped her face of tears. She won an Academy Award for her role in the film Dreamgirls. She has also won a Grammy for a recording album. After the hearing was over, Hudson left the courthouse without making a comment.
Balfour’s jealous rage consumed him in 2008. He was jealous over Julia Hudson, Jennifer Hudson’s sister and his estranged wife. Prior to the killing in 2008, he had threatened her on numerous occasions. One night he said he would first kill her family then come and kill her.
Hudson was the first witness to testify at Balfour’s trial in May and said she had known the defendant since elementary school. However, she said she had never liked him.
At the sentencing, Balfour spoke before being sentenced and said he offered his condolences to the family and that he prayed for the young nephew and still loved him.
