Three weeks before its theatrical release, a DVD-quality copy of the upcoming ensemble action film, “The Expendables 3,” starring Sylvester Stallone, has been leaked online. Now, Lionsgate scores a restraining order and financial freeze on assets against torrent sites responsible for the illegal distribution of the film. Read on for more details on this story.
According to Deadline, websites responsible for illegal distribution of Lionsgate’s leaked film should deliberately stop immediately or have their bank accounts seized. “Lions Gate has established that it will suffer irreparable harm in the absence of immediate relief,” ordered U.S. District Judge Margaret Meadow, granting the studio a temporary restraining order against torrent sites responsible for illegal creation and distribution of copies of the action ensemble film “The Expendables 3.”
Pirated copies of “The Expendables 3” have begun to show up on torrent-sharing sites on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. By Thursday, July 24, 2014, downloads have started to peak. The movie had been downloaded 250,000 on the first day, 189,052 times worldwide by 6:00 p.m. Eastern Thursday, and 42,216 downloads coming from the U.S.
On July 31, 2014, Lionsgate filed lawsuits on copyright infringement with the following websites: limetorrents.com, billionuploads.com, hulkfile.eu, played.to, swankshare.com and dotsemper.com. The parties aforementioned have stripped Lionsgate of their right of first publication, which interferes with Lionsgate’s contractual relationships with third parties. It also damages the studio’s goodwill among consumers and deprives it of revenue that will be difficult or impossible to calculate which the judge notes in her six-page order. The TRO will last until 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
