“Lucky Them” Synopsis:
The story was focused on Ellie Klug, an expert rock journalist in STAX Magazine who was more into flirting with musicians than getting into her business. Ellie’s editor gave her a chance of a lifetime to prove her worth. She was assigned to find out the truth and write a good story about what happened to the missing-in-action, presumed dead rock star Matthew Smith, who happened to be her ex-boyfriend.
Giles, Ellie’s boss, gave her $1,000 as a budget in search of Smith. Apparently, she misplaced the money. She got some funding from Charlie, a budding documentary filmmaker, who wanted to document her search for the rock star. Along the journey, there were twists and turns that Ellie felt too much for her to handle.
“Lucky Them” Review:
The critics from Rotten Tomatoes gave the dramedy a 92%, while 83% of the moviegoers would like to watch it. David Rooney of Hollywood Reporter particularly pointed out Toni Collette and Hayden Thomas Church’s acting which gave essence to the “minor-key film.”
New York Post’s Lou Lumenick praised Griffiths for her “indie charmer” and the cast for their solid acting in the film.
Meanwhile, Peter Travers of Rolling Stones specifically commented on the film’s key players, which produced the film’s “touching gravity.” Travers also cited how the search for Smith revealed the music scene’s past and future, and Ellie’s newfound strength in the broken places.
