The gang of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted took the top spot on both the US and Canadian box office charts for the second straight weekend by earning $35.5 million. It beat the new releases from Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise.
The third movie from the franchise about the misadventures of escaped zoo animals managed to thwart the new Tom Cruise movie Rock of Ages, which is a 1980s era musical. It placed third in the box office rankings. Sandler’s That’s My Boy got fifth place and observers said that it was the worst opening for a Sandler movie since Happy Gilmore in 1996.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted features the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The animals got in trouble after joining a traveling circus. The animated flick is produced by Dreamworks Animation and has made $120.5 million in domestic ticket sales since it was released.
Director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller Prometheus got second place. It is about space explorers who found a clue to the origins of mankind. It got $20.2 million for its second week, which brings its total ticket sales of $89 million after two weeks.
That’s My Boy is an R-rated comedy. Aside from Sandler, it features Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg. He plays the Sandler’s son in the movie. It failed to hype up the fans and only got $13 million in its opening week. According to someone familiar with the production, it cost around $65 million to make. Industry insiders said that the movie’s R rating was a factor in its poor performance in its opening weekend.
The Broadway musical adaptation Rock of Ages got third place with $15.1 million. Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta play a young couple who wants to achieve stardom. Tom Cruise plays a veteran rocker. It also features Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, and Bryan Cranston.
