“Madam Secretary” Season 2 Episode 6 “Catch and Release” aired last Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) tried every way possible in order to help track down and locate the first American ISIS leader who threatened all of the aid workers in the area. It included her brother, Dr. William “Will” Adams (Eric Stoltz). Meanwhile, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) tried his best help out Ivan, who was getting recalled back to Russia to his doom, as the government knew about his sexual orientation. Read on to learn more about the rest of the episode.

The episode began with the entire State Department and the government trying their best to be able to track down the first American ISIS leader. He had just beheaded an American volunteer while threatening to kill any American aid workers in the area.

Later, Elizabeth discovered that the American ISIS leader was Adam Fanning (Jason Hite). He is the son of Judith Fanning (Margaret Colin), a State Department Employee who had been stationed in Cairo, and whose husband had died due to a car crash years ago.

After showing her the video, Judith was taken in for questioning. The White House decided to keep Adam’s name under wraps so that he wouldn’t know that they were on to him.

Meanwhile, Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovski) pleaded with Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) to help his friend Ivan  Kolashkov (Dennis Staroselsky) out. He knew that Ivan’s recalling would only result into public humiliation, and prison, where he would most certainly die as he was a closet homosexual.

Concerned, Henry, with the blessing of the Defense Intelligence Agency, decided to approach Elizabeth with the matter. She promised to help under the condition that Ivan reveals that he is a homosexual.

Later that night, Elizabeth was greeted by her brother, Dr. William “Wil” Adams (Eric Stoltz). He had been forcibly removed from the camp he had been working in, as Elizabeth had every American aid worker in the area evacuated.

On the dinner table, Will and Elizabeth fought, as their ideologies and jobs clashed with each other. However, after telling Henry that she was concerned about the fact that Will hadn’t been back to London to see his wife and daughter in months, she agreed that the best way to talk to him would be to fly fishing with him like they used to.

She then got a call from White House Chief of Staff Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek). He told her that the FBI had discovered that Judith had sent some money over to her son.

The next day, Dimitri and Henry tried to convince Ivan to defect to the United States, but Ivan refused to do so. However, he told both Henry and Dimitri that he would act upon their other suggestion- to talk to General Doroshevich (Zenon Zeleniuch).

Before leaving, he sent a text message to Henry thanking him for everything, which caused Henry to worry. After  discovering that Ivan wasn’t picking up, he feared for the worst, and tried to stop him from killing himself, but it was too late.

Shaken, Dimitri told Henry that he wanted to defect right away, but Henry told him that he wouldn’t be honouring his friend’s death if he did so. He then told Dimitri to get the General to recall him so that Dimitri could work closely by his side.

The next morning, after talking to her Chief of Staff, Nadine Tolliver (Bebe Neuwirth) about the case, Elizabeth realized that Judith had sent the money to Adam for him to buy medicine for the Huntington’s Disease that he had inherited from his father, who had died because of it.

Afterwards, Elizabeth, after trying to talk to her brother about him going back to London to be with his family, even just for a little while, questioned him about how they got their medical supplies. It turned out that there was a courier who delivered high-quality drugs and supplies via the black market to both ISIS and American aid workers.

That information, coupled with the information that they were able to get from USAID, whom Nadine and Personal Assistant Blake Moran (Erich Bergen) managed to negotiate with, enabled them to track down the courier to where he was going to meet Adam.

After confirming that it was indeed him, in the situation room, President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) ordered their drones to fire a missile at them.

Elizabeth then arrived home late, due to the press conference that the President gave right after, where she was confronted by her brother, who realized that he had been used, and couldn’t believe that his sister had killed one of their best medical couriers. She then gave him a ticket to go back to Syria, but with a layover in London, so that he could see his wife and daughter.

Upstairs, she told Henry that she was sorry about Ivan. He told him, in answer to his question about knowing, as an operative, when one is in too deep, she told him that one would only know it when you are neck deep in over your head.
