Madam Secretary Recap: Face the Nation
Negotiating diplomacy for her country…and her family!

Madam Secretary” Season 1 Episode 17 “Face the Nation” aired last Sunday, Mar. 22, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) worked to save the Amazon rainforest from American and Chinese oil drilling. She tried to prepare herself for an appearance on television for “Face the Nation” regarding the coup and what happened to her in Iran. However, she later discovered that she wasn’t fine as she was suffering from PTSD due to the incident. Read on to learn more about this episode.

At breakfast, before work, Dr. Henry MCord (Tim Daly) wondered if his wife, Secretary of State  Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) was alright. He had noticed that she had thrown herself back into her work as soon as she got back from Iran, was spacing out whenever Jason (Evan Roe) played his first person shooting game. She was a little bit on edge as she hadn’t really been sleeping well. Elizabeth insisted that she was fine. She didn’t tell him that she could hear the gunfire and the screams that she had heard. Foreign Minister Javani’s (Usman Ally) house had been bombed due to the coup.

At the office, she berated her press coordinator, Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) for calling her a hero. She didn’t consider herself to be one, and told them that she couldn’t go on “Face the Nation” that day. She had to attend the school orientation at Jason’s new public school.

She was then forced to have a follow up check up with a nurse that was waiting for her, and allowed her to draw her blood. She talked to Deputy Assistant Laura Vargas (Audrey Esparza), who felt faint at the sight of blood, and Mike “B” Barnow (Kevin Rahm) as to why she should or shouldn’t allow Chip Harding (Kevin O’Rourke) to drill for oil in the Amazonian rainforest. She then allowed Laura to come with her to her meeting with Chip. She ordered Jay Whitman (Sebastian Arcelus) to be with his wife who was going into labor. At the meeting, she made it clear that she didn’t like Harding’s corrupt dealings in Ecuador. She didn’t want the government to allow him to drill for oil there.

At Jason’s school orientation, Elizabeth spaced out after seeing the words “Shooter Drill” marked on the school principal’s calendar. She tersely told Henry that she wanted a bodyguard for Jason. Later, he interviewed a rather large, former military, bodyguard. He answered his question regarding the symptoms of PTSD, all of which, Henry realized, Elizabeth had been exhibiting.

Back at the office, Elizabeth met with the Ecuadorian Ambassador. He didn’t believe that she could get Congress on board with the idea to give their money to conserve the rainforest. It was instead of investing in an oil company which would drill there. He then told her that he was going to favor the Chinese oil company instead of her offer.

Afterwards, her speechwriter, Matt Mahoney (Geoff Arend), Daisy and her Chief of Staff, Nadine Tolliver (Bebe Neuwirth) began to prepare her for her “Face the Nation” appearance. When asked about what had happened when the incident occurred, she froze as she experienced another flashback. Afterward, Nadine told them to take a break. She told Daisy to leave Elizabeth’s schedule open for an appearance anytime.

The next day, Henry and Elizabeth argued about the fact that they were going back on their word that Jason would live a normal life without bodyguards. She then left and met up with Foreign Chinese Minister Chen (Francis Jue). It was after she contested that the Chinese had no right drill oil in Ecuador. They weren’t a member of the treaty that had been signed regarding the Amazon rainforest. He told her to retract her protest, but Elizabeth became agitated and began to shout at the minister. He told him that if they cut down the rainforest, then they would have no chance of leaving their children a better place to live in in the future. She then had Blake Moran (Erich Bergen) call 911. She felt that she was having a heart attack.

At the hospital, she was told that she had a panic attack and that she should take some days off of work. She then admitted to Henry that she wasn’t ready to talk about what happened in Iran and that it had affected her more than she thought.

At the office, Nadine calmed Minister Chen down. The next day, Elizabeth came to work so that she, Mike and Laura could talk to Owen Walton (Max Gordon Moore) so that his foundation could be the ones to help save the Amazonian Rainforest. However, before entering, Elizabeth realized that she couldn’t go back to work. They left Nadine, Laura, and Mike to deal with Owen, who agreed to help them against Harding.

Later that night, Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek) surprised Elizabeth by telling her that he also suffered from a past trauma. She gave her the number of a psychologist who was discreet. Later, while playing Jason’s game, Elizabeth finally opened up to Henry. She told him that she was afraid of what they had done to their children. She felt bad for allowing young Abdul to witness his father being murdered. She then finally slept beside Jason, and finally appeared on “Face the Nation.”
