“Madam Secretary” Season 2 Episode 5 “The Long Shot” aired last Sunday, November 1, 2015 at 9:00 PM on CBS. In this episode, both Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) and her policy advisor, Jay Whitman (Sebastian Arcelus), worked on the political and media front, in the hopes of avoiding an armed conflict with Russia that might cause a third World War. Meanwhile, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) tried to motivate his young asset, Captain Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovski) to continue cooperating with him, while trying to keep Olga Gorev (Sofiya Akilova) safe from her father’s enemies. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Foreign Minister Anton Gorev (Yorgo Constantine) asking for monetary help from Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni), as his assets were frozen in the United Kingdom, and as he needed the money in order to go back home in order to run against Maria Ostrov (Angela Gots), who had just called for a special election in thirty days time.

However, this phone call caused Elizabeth not to listen that much to her middle child, Alison McCord (Kathrine Herzer), who was getting fed up of being ignored by her mother.

While Elizabeth was at a security briefing where Oliver Shaw (Kobi Libii) informed them that their Air Force One hacker was a legendary hacker for hire named Dash, policy advisor Jay Whitman (Sebastian Arcelus) briefed speech writer Matt Mahoney (Geoffrey Arend) and press coordinator Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) regarding their upcoming meeting later that day with several movie studio executives. The plan was to try to get some American shows to air in the Eastern part of Russia and air real news items about the United States in order to counter the anti-West propaganda news items that were generally shown to households after several game shows.

The meeting started out with a lot of promise, but after learning that they wouldn’t be able to gain any money from it at all, no matter what Jay said, they refused to help.

Meanwhile, Ukranian President Mikhail Bozek (Lev Gorn) passed by Elizabeth’s office after picking up the aid packets and the weapons that they were giving them to help against Russia, asked for her help to make Ukraine part of NATO so that the entire Western world would come to their aid against Russia. However, Elizabeth was averse to this as military retaliation of that sort would result in a third World War, which meant that their only chance of stopping that from happening is if Gorev became president.

Afterwards, thanks to the blessing and help of British Ambassador Graham Shenton (Michael Siberry), she managed to persuade a respected English gentleman to buy off Gorev’s properties in London, which would amount to $80 million, the same amount that he had been asking for in the first place.

While this happened, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) instructed his new asset, Captain Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovski) to attend a function at the Russian Embassy, as the Russian General Vladimir Doroshevich (Zenon Zeleniuch) had just arrived. There, he learned that Maria Ostrov wanted to attack Ukraine as soon as she became president, and overheard some Intelligence Officers talking about Maria’s plan to kidnap Olga Gorev (Sofiya Akilova) in order to use her as leverage against her father.

Henry then followed him after he left, and pulled him off of the streets. He told him that he did care about the safety of his asset, and managed to pick up Olga just as the intelligence officers came to pick her up.

However, Dimitri didn’t tell him about Maria’s plan to attack Ukraine.

Back at home, Elizabeth guessed as to why Olga was there, and discovered from her eldest daughter, that what Alison was experiencing was normal for middle children.

The next day, President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine), who had instructed her to hold the cash from Gorev until he shared some intelligence with them, allowed Elizabeth to give him the money, much to National Security Advisor Craig Sterling’s (Julian Acosta) chagrin, as he had helped them out by giving them the identity of Dash-George Lasco.

Back at home, while in the midst of playing a game with the family, Elizabeth had to break the news to Olga that her father had been killed, as one of his aides had killed him.

This, in turn, spurred Dimitri to action, and informed Henry that Maria was planning on invading Ukraine in a month’s time.

At the situation room, Elizabeth and others discovered that Bozek’s plane had suffered a cyber attack, but thankfully, they were all unharmed. However, this meant that Dash had truly been hired by Maria Ostrov, who was determined to go against the West and Ukraine.

Also, Elizabeth didn’t realize that she had gotten affected badly by Gorev’s death, and apologized to Alison for not paying more attention to her.
