“Madam Secretary” Season 1 Episode 15 “The Ninth Circle” aired last Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 8:00 PM on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) went to Turkey in order to repair the damage in the aftermath of the  botched covert operation to kidnap Samila Mahdavi, and in the process discovered a shocking revelation that would put both the United States and Iran in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Jason McCord (Evan Roe) dealt with a bully at school, and Press Coordinator Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) became conflicted regarding her job. This is the second installment in the three part event that started with last week’s episode, “Whisper of the Ax”. Read on to learn more about this episode.

Isabelle (Marin Hinkle) paid a visit to the Secretary of State, Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni), who showed her the note that Juliet (Nilaja Sun) had left. It revealed to them details of what she was doing, such as spying on her own country, which she considered was for a “righteous cause.” This led them to believe that everything had just been part of a bigger plan.

Meanwhile, at the State Department, while the McCord sisters advised their brother, Jason McCord (Evan Roe) to unfriend a bully named Preston Walsh (Gil Daniels), Press Coordinator Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) was being questioned by the press regarding the death of Special Forces Operative Brett Boris, whose body was being held by the Turkish government, as he had been part of the botched up operation to abduct Samila Mahdavi. However, the President’s Chief of Staff, Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek), told Elizabeth and CIA Director Andrew Munsey (Patrick Breen) that for now, they were going to disavow any CIA involvement in the operation.

This placed Elizabeth in a difficult position, especially as she had to lie to Brett’s mother, Mrs. Mary Lou Boris (Debra Monk), as to why he had been there. However, as the Turkish government decided to release the footage of the attempted abduction, she pacified Mrs. Boris by allowing her to go with her to Turkey in order to get Brett’s body back, and so that she could get Samila’s possessions, which according to Isabelle, included an encrypted laptop.

At the State Department, Daisy became even more conflicted after she was interrogated by the press, and after learning that speechwriter Matt Mahoney (Geoffrey Arend) had also spied on Jackson for Elizabeth. Later on, as she couldn’t take it anymore, her assistant, Phoebe Roberts (Elia Monte-Brown) began to handle the press conferences.

As soon as Elizabeth arrived in Turkey, she was surprised to hear from her husband, Henry (Tim Daly), that Jason had punched Preston several times in the nose, because of which he had to get a surgery performed on the  nose so that he could breathe. Later, during a video conference with him, Elizabeth told him that he had to apologize to Preston, and both Henry and Elizabeth agreed that he would only apologize for hitting him.

She then had a meeting with Foreign Minister Ozan Canoglu (Erick Avari) who told him that in exchange for withdrawing their accusation against the CIA; for the release of Brett’s body and Samila’s laptop, which Munsey told her to get at any cost, they would give them a discounted price on American gas. This was a counter offer, as Iran wanted Samila’s belongings, as she was an Iranian.

While waiting, she and Mrs. Boris identified Brett’s body. Afterwards, Elizabeth was surprised to learn from Minister Zahed Zhavani (Usman Ally) that Samila was working for the CIA and that America was plotting against Iran. However, even though she didn’t know about this, he refused to believe that she knew nothing about this and told her that they were going to back out of their planned peace talks. The next day, Canoglu agreed to everything except for releasing the laptop to them, but Zhavani changed his mind, and gave her a flash drive with a copy of the contents of the laptop, and told her that he believed her.

At school, Jason only gave a “reserved” and not an “unreserved” apology to Preston, as he had believed that he did the right thing in standing up against him and for defending Elizabeth’s honor. Elizabeth and Henry, who had been trying to reason out with the dean of the school, then became annoyed, which resulted in Jason getting expelled. Afterwards, he revealed that he had given a “reserved” apology so that he would get expelled because he didn’t like his school, as all they did was argue about whose family was more rich and more powerful than the other.

At the White House, the confronted Munsey, was revealed to be Samila’s handler, and who, along with others, plotted  a coup in the Iranian government so that they would be able to create a “nuclear free Iran” for President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine). This was also the reason why Secretary Vincent Marsh and CIA Operative George Peters was killed.
