“Madam Secretary” Season 2 Episode 9 “Russian Roulette” aired last Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) got ready to give the speech of a lifetime in front of the United Nations. However, before she could give her speech, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) decided to share a theory of his that had begun thanks to Captain Dimitri Petrov’s (Chris Petrovski) intelligence, despite the risks of being thrown into jail. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode picked up from where it left off with Moscow and the Kremlin getting plunged into darkness.

As soon as the generators kicked in, President Maria Ostrov (Angela Gots) called President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) and warned him that they would retaliate for what they had done, and denied Russia’s involvement in the Air Force One attacks.

At the White House, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) was disturbed by the fact that she was the only one who was trying to think of a solution that wouldn’t end up in an escalated military conflict.

At home, after learning that Jason McCord (Evan Roe) was scared stiff to be playing as a the starting linebacker in an upcoming crucial game, Elizabeth told Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) that they should stop “dancing around” topics that they couldn’t discuss, especially as last time, they almost got thrown into prison.

Annoyed, Henry went to Jane Fellowes  (Jill Hennessy) to ask about the status of Captain Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovksi), and Henry begged her to tell the White House that hacking Air Force One wasn’t part of the plans in Russia’s current playbook, which Dimitri had gotten for them.

Russia then had several gas pipelines, which provided gas to the entire Western Europe, shut down in retaliation.

Elizabeth then suggested that she go in front of the United Nations in order to give a speech to rally their allies to their side in the hopes that seeing a united front would scare Russia into not retaliating anymore against America.

However, back at home, Henry, who had been warned by White House Chief of Staff Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek) not to talk to Elizabeth about his theories, shared his theory that he believed that based on Dimitri’s intelligence, Russia did not hack Air Force One.

She then headed over to Cybercom where Oliver Shaw (Kobi Libii) informed Elizabeth that despite the fact that their hacker had been wired money, NSA hadn’t picked up any record of it in the bank, which made Elizabeth begin to believe that all their evidence was fake.

Because of this, Matt Mahoney (Geoff Arend) wasn’t able to get his speech read, as Elizabeth decided to cancel her appearance at the United Nations and met up with Chinese Foreign Minister Chen (Francis Jue) who assured her that forcing Russia and America to fight each other wasn’t in their best interests and that China would simply just repossess America when they come after them.

Jay Whitman (Sebastian Arcelus) then noticed that it was strange that President Mikhail Bozek (Lev Gorn) didn’t look that desperate to get Western attention, unlike the month before, which prompted Elizabeth to have her staff dig into the plane crash.

Later that night, Elizabeth attended Jason’s game, where he ended up getting injured while stopping a potential touchdown, earning him an MVP trophy and the realization that he didn’t want to play football anymore.

During the game, Elizabeth told Henry that it was possible that Bozek had faked the plane malfunction, and confirmed her suspicions after visiting Craig Sterling (Julian Acosta), who told her that all of the officials on that plane had no injuries on them which was strange.

Back at the office, Matt discovered, thanks to a friend, that the manifest on Bozek’s plane had been changed two days before he left, in which he had included members of his staff who used to be former military and had paratrooping experience. That and the fact that they had just found a Ukranian man dead in a Vietnamese hospital due to polonium poisoning was the final straw they needed to confront Bozek, who admitted that he had done it so that America would go against Russia.

They then decided to maintain American presence there and implemented a no-fly zone, but Russia decided to violate that causing America to retaliate against them.
